Well... it's reasonably good at just general lighting, is it not? Besides, what good is a rocket launcher if you can't blast your way through all the walls and doors? Hah, who needs keys when you can blast your way straight to the exit!

Ahem... Well anyways... I once tried shooting out a light to see if I could, and I guess I got lucky, and it did infact go out... I actually didn't like that, cause that means that there's more places that monsters could be hiding now... ah crap!

Saves from those times where one stray bullet, or bit of damage from an imp fireball blows up a cannister right next to you. Same with one going off accidentally when it's not right next to a monster. If it takes a couple shots, you can sorta prime them to go off exactly when you want.

But why two bullets to explode and it only takes one punch with your fist.

I'm assuming that fists do much more damage than a single pistol round...

Of course, the response to Skrot's most recent post will be "But that's not realistic!"

Naturally, I agree... but then again, we all know that Hell only spills over onto Mars on Monday, whereas Doom 3 takes place on a Wednesday.

It's not about realism, folks.

As soon as you get the shotgun, the pistol is near useless. In the original Doom, the pistol and chaingun used the same type of ammo. Same for the plasma rifle and BFG. I was kind of hoping that Doom 3 would carry that over.

The pistol is good for taking out slow moving zombies. When I first started playing the game I was also was wondering weather there would be any ammo overlap.

When I started this thread I didn’t think it would grow so fast. I had a bunch of posts I wanted to comment on but that task as become too overwhelming, and I don’t think it will get done now. I hope no one gets me wrong. The game is great. It’s like getting your car painted, and it’s looking really sweet until you notice the only run in your paint or a fly in a the paint. If they only took a little more time cleaning out the paint booth before they painted the car there wouldn’t be a fricken fly in the paint. Or in the games case made it a 10/10 rather than the 9/10 that it is. Some other things mentioned aren’t issues with the game at all. Just design preferences. Like having the guns use the same ammo. Or as much as I don’t want to bring it up again, weather or not the flashlight should be available while carrying a weapon or not. I started this thread because rather than playing doom 3 I only played a couple of hours into the game and am waiting until I get my hands on a 6800 GT. At which point I will play the game from start to finish. In the mean time I was left to ponder my first impression. Some of which I was disappointed in, and this thread was started. I was hopping people would post own unique quirks with the game after just a first impression. While waiting to play the game it’s one of the few things to talk about without spoiling gameplay.

Then why bother with all that REALISTIC physics crap ?
Or how about all the realistic lighting ?
Or the realistic Mars Atmosphere, and you not being able to breathe, etc.. ?

Seems to me, that some people are making excuses for just about every damn thing.
Well I have news for you people, It's NOT perfect, and far from that.
Sure, the graphics are amazing. But amazing graphics don't make amazing games.
Personally, I would rather fire up some REAL Doom 1 and 2, and have a blast killing everything that moves, than play Doom 3 again.
But Hey, thats just me.

D.K brings up some good points, simply dismissing them as "it's not realism" folks hardly addresses them.

You took my statement out of context. My comment about realism was the joke involving demons only invading on Mondays.

Because they just add to the aesthetics of the game, and are not fundamental to the gameplay. Nice looking graphics is its own reward.

I don't really see how this is exactly realistic... I mean, look at the size of the air canisters you pick up, and how long it lasts? That's some wastage! Surely the suit he wears isn't that leaky? Not if it was realistic...

Perfect compared to what? Compared to what it was meant to be, or compared to something that it was never going to be? I consider it pretty damn near a perfect version of this sort of game.

Yep, that's your opinion. I don't see what you mean by real Doom 1 and 2 though. Doom 3 isn't the real Doom 1 and 2...
