Default Doom 3 Performance Help Plz

Here's the rundown of my setup:
Athlon XP 2400+
1 GB Dual Channel DDR (2 512 chips)
SATA Hard Drive
ABIT NF7-S Motherboard
XFX 6800 GT

I get about 9600 3dmarks in 3kmark 03. And all of my other games seem to be running fine. Yet at 1024x768 if i run a timedemo demo1 i get about 47 fps. In small rooms the fps stays up in the 60s, and dips when monsters are around. In large rooms with nothing around i get 30-39 fps .. and that is standing completely still looking forward.

The only thing I can even guess is that my CPU is holding me back.

Your performance looks about normal. Your CPU probably is the bottleneck in D3, it is on my system. The easy way to test is to run the game in a lower resolution. If the framerates are still the same then your CPU is a bottleneck.

Go into the nvidia control panel. Go to performance and quality. Make sure show advanced settings is checked. Scroll down to hardware acceleration and make sure it set to "single display mode". If its not then that is the problem.

Yeah I just did that today (benchmarked at EVERY resolution) I got 50 FPS in EVERY resolution from 640x480 to 1600x1200... time to get a AMD 64.

I just tried the game on AthlonXP 2100 and Athlon64 3200 with the same video card (FX5800) the frame rate went from 48 to 81 fps by that CPU (RAM and MB) change. So that should give you an idea that your CPU is the bottleneck and what increase you should expect.
