Unhappy System hangs after startx

I've just setup a system running linux 2.6.7 kernel on a shuttle system with an onboard GeForce4 MX. The kernel is setup for 4k stacks.
When ever is startx, the system hangs... and as far as i can tell there seems to be no error in the logs? anyone any ideas whats going on.
The driver was compiled with gcc 3.4 and the window manager is Xorg.

Your config and log show you are not loading the glx module. Does the "nv" driver work?

i had this same problem, in your kernel config make sure that drm is disabled and that you have the nvidia riva framebuffer support disable, you sould use generic vesa and vga16 fb support with geforces and up, thats what fixed mine. good luck have fun!

whig,
I disabled the glx section to see if that was the problem... it didn't make any difference. Looking at the log and then comparing it to a working systems log, it looks like the system dies before it gets to the glx bit.

The 'nv' driver does work... i'm using it temporarily... but i'd really like to get the nvidia one working for its 3d abilities.

Cheers for the help so far.

I forgot to mention that i'm using nvidia-1.0.6111.

linux_inside v2,
I tried your suggestions... no luck i'm afraid. drm was already disabled as was fb. I tried enabling it... but alas it didn't work.
Cheers for trying.

At which point does the system hang? Your log file seems to show a successful X startup which leads me to wonder whether the freeze is caused not by the drivers but by your DM?

My system also hangs after startx.
I'm using a custom 2.6.8.1 kernel, my video card is a NV28 (GeForce 4 Ti 4200 AGP).
The problem appears for all NvAGP option values, except for NvAGP 0 (no agp).
The symptoms vary as for the things compiled in the kernel.
The driver works in the standard 2.6.8.1 kernel, but when I quit X, the kernel oopses,
(usually in the hotplug driver), still works for a few seconds and than panics.
In the configuration as attached below, after startx, the kernel freezes and there is nothing to do but press the power button.
I also tried a kernel with 8k stack size (STACK_PAGE_COUNT in processor.h), but the freeze remained.
