basically, the trailer is just a mix of some old scenes, not quite new.

a big warning for you guys.... Valve is very well know for releasing concept art (raytraced shots) (no real in game screenshots of the game). they made al lot of noise about "HDR" + ATI hardware last year , and last valve world its that it was dropped from the retail game. so many of the stuff you are looking maybe only be seen of a mission pack of Hl2 (if any). and others are not even using their engine ,but professional 3d animation software (nothing to do with games).

this is an example of their concept art.. (graphics are done using real raytracing professional aplications)

notice the perfect lighting and shadows everywhere.. looks lifelike quality . light reflections whenver there is supposed to be.

and this is the real game graphics..

notice that many object doesnt have shadows at all ,and when there are shadows they are blocky . looks gaming like. no light reflections everywhere . hence the gaming look.

the diferences in the lightings/shadows techniques are remarkable.
quote me on this.. many people that expect revolutionary graphics will be extremely dissapointed when the game graphics doesnt look like many of the PR marketing released shots.

Actually what you are refering to is just images that show the skybox models vs the ig ones. Yes the skybox models can be much higher than the IG ones.

And actually HL2 will scale upward beyond Dx9 so I'm not quite sure how dissapointed people will be.

And HDR in hl2 does give everything those perfect looking soft styled shadows

Ahh Actually one of those images is a real photograph lol

here is the quote for you

"Viktor showed some of the HL2 demos from this year's E3, and a Powerpoint presentation featuring references used in the creation of HL2 along with the end result screenshots from the game."

just so people don't get confused with what is real and what is not

i saw this on planethalflifes q/a also, kinda nifty

Q: Will we see any graphical enhancements and/or support for future technologies through Steam?

A: Gabe talked about how through Steam they could add enhanced graphics as they become available. "If a user say, installs a brand new x900 (assuming that's what is next) that has some fancy new features that there old card didn't support, such as pixel shader 3 (for example). We (VALVe) could release a small update to the game to download that content to that user's computer as soon as Steam discovers the new Video Card". Basically they can release custom content to your computer depending on your system; and if you upgrade to hardware that enables a new technology, it can enable it!

Concept art .. (or whatever name you choose) is not real ingame screenshots ,not done in the engine. its irrelevant if they use it for inspiration for their game or not. point is that is overhype gamers (for things they will never see in the game) . i will buy Hl2 too.. a must have game .. just like FArcry/Stalker/ and the already released Doom3 .. so im waiting for it ,just like any other ,but i will not like most gamers to blindly believe in every screenshot they see released "of the game" is what they will see in the game.

yes i edited my post to somewhat try to express myself better

What I am saying is that a skybox is 3d now and you see it in game. Also that those aren't said to be screenshots they are concept pictures vs in game pictures. Thats why I added the quotes and whatnot. But I do agree with you. What we also have to understand is again image quality that is biased torwards an individual set of cards. That is my biggest personal fear with HL2.

OK...it's getting harder and harder to tell which screenshots are in-game, which are concept art, and which are photographs...I'm impressed now.

You mean not all those shots in the top link are screenshots!? Why thank you good sirs, I don't believe I would have ever worked that out on my own. Its a good thing we have people of your wit and, if I may say so, dashing good looks around the place to look after us.

However, a suggestion if I may be so bold? I would suggest that Valve are infact not passng them all off as 'screenshots'. I would also suggest that within the context of the presentation that particular pictures are fulfiling their purpose by quite deliberatly and maliciously *not* being screenshots.

So can we please get over it?

(btw, does anybody know if there is a link to the presentation online? Or did they just steal some pictures from it?)

The following are real in-game screenshots.

There are a few more, but these do the job. If you think this doesn't look impressive, well then, I feel bad for you. Again, these are shots of the game, not concept.
