Default very slow acceleration (amd64, 32bit fedora core 2, geforce 4 mx440)

I've just built a new PC:

AMD64 Athlon 3000
ASUS K8V motherboard
512MB Corsair PC3200 RAM
some hard disk or other (hdparm benches it at 35MB/sec and it's using 32bit I/O and DMA)

The hard disk came from my previous Athlon 32bit box, so FC2 is 32bit. Everything works and is bloody fast. 2D performance smokes my XP2600 and GF3Ti500 home setup, but video acceleration and 3d acceleration are both terrible.
I'm using AGPGART, which I don't have a huge amount of choice unless I recompile the kernel. According to /proc AGP 8x support is enabled. If I disable it I get equally poor performance.

If I play a simple mpeg1 it just stutters a lot in totem/mplayer, and glxgears can only manage 500fps.

Any ideas?
