Strange problem with nvidia video drivers

Ok,

I have a very confusing problem going on...

I am running kernel 2.6.8 (Debian) and Asus K8N-E Deluxe motherboard with a GeForce FX5500 video card. I downloaded the latest Linux IA32 drivers (I am currently running 32 bit linux) and compiled them. All went well. I editted my XF86Config-4 file and all was well. GDM came up just fine and everything was perfect. However, after every reboot GDM attempts to load and I get the following error at the end of my XF86 log:

....
Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
..."

If I re-install (recompile) the driver, all works fine until I reboot.

Is this a bug? Any thoughts on a work around?

I'm willing to bet you haven't put the nvidia module entry into /etc/modules. Aieyah. You have to do this for it to be loaded at boot time.

Like so:

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are
# to be loaded at boot time, one per line.  Comments begin with
# a "#", and everything on the line after them are ignored.

# NVIDIA driver
nvidia

The error message you provided was hardly very specific, X gives that message for most nasty problems. Usually the thing that went wrong is just above that. Giving the output of "tail /var/log/XFree86.0.log" would be a bit more helpful.
