Default AMD64, Tyan K8W, Geforce 5700 = black screen

I want to post a followup to my original thread on the black screen of death issue I've been experiencing.

OS: Gentoo (lastest patches) 64 bit OS
MB: Tyan Thunder K8W S2885
VC: AOpen Nvidia Geforce FX 5700
Drivers: 6111, latest available.
AGP: kernel (or nvidia's native for that matter)

Issue: It does NOT WORK. Black screen of death. Substituting an Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 Ultra 3 into the SAME BOX, SAME EXACT CONFIG FILES, SAME EVERYTHING WORKS PERFECTLY. (And the 5700 Ultra works fine on another identicle box running Suse 9.1 in 32bit mode.)

So, can someone from Nvidia please tell me on top of the information I've already sent/posted what else that's needed in order to get a bug fix or narrow down the exact software component causing the issue? It's now approaching 2 months since my original email bug report and I still haven't heard anything. (And no, keeping the 5700 Ultra isn't an option, it's someone elses and the driver read-me explicitly states that the 5700 IS supported in 64bit mode.)

Thank you!

When you say that the 5700 Ultra works fine in an identical machine running SuSE 9.1 32bit, do you mean your AOpen Nvidia Geforce FX 5700? If not, have you tried that card in another system?

Sorry should have been more specific in that particular statement: the Geforce FX 5700 Ultra 3 works fine in the same identicle hardware under either 64 bit gentoo OR 32 bit Suse 9.1 (two separate computers running the OS's).

I have tested my card (Geforce 5700 Ultra) using 32 bit gentoo on the same hardware (my computer) and it does not work. (I used a spare partition and did a complete, clean install from scratch.) It resulted in the same black screen, with X chewing up 100% of the CPU just as it does under 64bit.

The card works fine when in 'PCI mode' on the same hardware under a 64 or 32 bit install of Gentoo. Of course the performance is bad, but it does work.

One thing that has seemed to change (with the 6111 drivers ) is the 2d desktop screen refreshes seem smoother than before (in pci mode of course).

drumz, have you tried to switch the graphics cards in the computers or the hard disks ?

I had a similar problem that was fixed by replacing the motherboard, I've a new K8W that worked ok with my 5700 Ultra, that was later replaced by a 6800 running perfectly.

My previous MB only allowed me to use AGP 4x, with the replacement board everything runs fine in AGP 8x.

Your hardware may be broken. If you need more info, please ask.

I swapped video cards.

It is properly detecting all of the cards, and detecting them all in 8x agp. FX5700 gives black screen. Same hardware, same config files, same kernel, same everything with a FX5700 Ultra works fine.

FX5700 fails under both 32 and 64 bit.

The FX5700 Ultra that works on my hardware and a friends works on my hardware in 64bit mode and on his hardware (identicle) under 32bit Suse.

The FX5700 works on my hardware in pci mode only under 32 or 64 bit gentoo.

Please note the difference: My card (which doesn't work) is a plain FX5700. The other card that does work is an FX5700 Ultra.

I'd say your FX5700 is faulty. In my config, I've been able to use a GF4200 (AGP-4x), a FX5700(AGP4x-8x) and a 6800(AGP8x) all with the same configuration file.

Do you have access to any other FX5700 (non Ultra) ? If so, you can determine if your problem resides on the hardware or the drivers.

It'd also be interesting to know if your 5700 works with e.g. AGP 4x or in another system, be it 32-bit or 64-bit.

Changing the AGP setting in the BIOS to 4 results in a non-bootable box.

I have reset the AGP setting back to '4/8' in the BIOS and am now working on getting the nvidia driver installed manually with the proper changes to make it work only in 4x.

In 64bit mode, 4x AGP I still get a black screen of death. Here's the /proc output:

Is that /proc/interrupts output from a failing or working configuration?

the /proc/interrupts is from a failing, 64bit OS version running in 4x agp.

In 4x mode under 32bit OS it's still a black screen of death. Here's the /proc output:

/proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status

Driver: AGPGART

and here's the /proc/interrupts when it fails under 32bit os at 4x agp:
