Question Finally stable 61.11? [patch inside]

It seems the 61.11 graphics driver is finally stable on my nforce2, at least till now it didn't lock up though since a few hours a compiling session (emerge -e gnome) is running. Usually in this combination (ACPI, APIC, REGPARM, AGP8x) it would lock up quite fast...

Terence Ripperda, one of Nvidia's driver devs, posted a patch at lkml, which I used on above driver and since then no more lock-ups for me. Just coincidence? Try yourself! I am using a patched 2.6.9-rc1 kernel (1GB lowmem, staircase8x, unspecified disconnect values for more cooling) and AGPGART (w/o fast writes) instead of NVAGP and running xorg-x11. If anyone's intersted, I can post my kernel config.

This is Terence's patch, whcih probably will be in Nvidia's next driver. Don't ask me how to do this with the installer. I just slightly modified the gentoo ebuild...

(Removed the code, download the attachment; see down)

Hi,

thanks for that info (luckily, I do not have probs).
Isn't it nice to see, that nvidia is working together with the kernel people?
Despite all the bashing, nvidia is not that bad ;o)

patching file nv.c
patch unexpectedly ends in middle of line
Hunk #6 succeeded at 3628 with fuzz 1.

Sadly, "screen frozen, but mouse pointer moves" bug is still present. I am using NVIDIA AGP and X.org. Could you post your lilo.config (irq, acpi, apic options), xorg.config and your kernel options. I m a bit frustated since series 6 of Nvidia drivers went out, I have instability issues quite often (more than one or two crashes at day),.

Nope, the patch isn't working here either, with NvAGP or agp-gart, locks up before GNOME can finish loading.

Too bad. Have you tried to use ACPI PM TIMER? Maybe that helped me, as well.

I can't even get X started -- X goes into 100% CPU for a half hour before I killed it with an ssh login -- completely blank screen. Didn't even change the resolution. I think the Gentoo ebuild is using the patch linked to -- at least "ebuild `equery which nvidia-kernel` unpack" gives me an nv.c which does pci_enable_device. Is Terrence's patch something else?

So, after having made a bug report, the newest gentoo ebuild should automatically apply this patch.
