Default X segfaults when using composite

I'm running on a classic geforce 3, with the latest 1.0-6111 drivers. For some time now I have been running Xorg cvs.

However, for some reason, when using the composite extension (by xcompmgr or metacity's builtin composite manager), whenever I start an opengl application (other than glxgears, that's the only app that seems to work), the server segfaults, and destroys the VT that it was started from (the screen is blank, no keyboard access). Ssh is the only way to get into the system after that. Even invoking glxinfo crashes the server. Using another card (mga 200 pci) or turning off glx extension doesn't crash the server.

Anyone have a clue why this happens, or has anyone used the composite extension successfuly?

edit: Actually, even glxgears manages to crash the server after a few tries.

Yes I can reproduce this with X.org 6.8.0 rc4 too. Looks like we will need new NVidia drivers when stable X.org 6.8.0 is out.

I can reproduce that too with Xorg 6.8.0 / nvidia 1.0.6111 driver.
Starting X, then xcompmgr and then an opengl app crashes the X server randomly, starting an audio app before the opengl app crashes the X server right away with a signal 11.

Hi,

I can not reproduce it.
When I start vegastrike fullscreen when xcompmgr is running, vs will switch to window mode for some seconds, than xcompmgr crashes, than vs switches back to fullscreen. But X does not crash nor vegastrike (and I have not tried other apps).

starting an opengl app (I think mostly sdl apps) xcompmgr segfaults if it is
running. No X crash though...

I think RenderAccel might be causing the segfault.

When it's turned off, the X server doesn't crash any more, however, compositing is slow and unusable.

To the people that cannot reproduce that crash, do you have RenderAccel set to "on" ?

also, what nvidia cards does everyone have?

Mine is a classic geforce 3

I have the same problem with Xorg 6.8.0 final and latest xcompmgr.

It's seem to be a problem related to Option "RenderAccell" that is expiremental feature as
Xorg.0.log report.

Exclamation Re: X segfaults when using composite

i have noticed the same problems...
Nvidia driver with composite extension + hw render + openGL make my X server crash....

i hope this problem can be fixed soon (nvidia or xorg 6.8 problem?)

shadows and transparency (accelerated) are nice!

I for some reason can't seem to get xcompmgr to work, I have xorg 6.8.1 installed. When I do a xcompmgr -c &, it gives me the error: [1] 8847
No composite extension

I thought it would be a matter of editing xorg.conf and add:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

but as it turns out those three lines where already there and _the only_ thing in the file. Should there be anything else in the file besides those 3 lines? and how can I get xcompmgr working?...

thanx
