What is the argument on this? I not talking about anything but the r9700pro being slower/faster/the same as a GF4 ti4600. It probably runs doom3 alpha 0.02 faster because

GASP!

Its ****ing faster card. As in better. Before anyone has a coniption fit think about. The r9700 was released MUCH after the ti4600 of course it will be better, its newer! And if Nvidia releases the NV30 before the next high end ATi card (as it WILL) well its going to faster and nvidia will take the speed crown back.
If these companies wanted to have a true race they wouldrelease their best cards at the same time.

Dudes, it's an alpha. Get over it.
Ragdoll physics etc... are in D3(JC stated). An alpha is experimental piece of software.

I'll get Volt on all of you guys

ITS AN ALPHA WITH COMPRESSED SOUND. performance will only get better. nothing should be assumed at this point, with the leak of the alpha, doom3 has most likely gone on a different path altogether.

"Performance can only get better" Again not reallly. Again I had already stated that the ragdoll effect was not added to every character in this alpha. Nor was all the clipping.

Sure, not all of the code was exactly polished....but Carmack is usually pretty damn good on his coding in the first place, so it's usually pretty safe to say it's got a pretty solid rendering setup..though I'm not sure.

But 'performance' may not get 'better' in the sense that framerates will increase. But will dip down as more features are added, only to be optimized to have as fast as possible *without cutting the features*.

The main thing in Doom 3 that eats so much is the lighting. With so much dynamic lighting involved on every object, it obviously requires quite a bit of rendering power.

Point being...you're not going to see over 60-70 FPS on anything other than R9700/NV30 class hardware at 800x600 rendering...it's just not going to happen so dont even hope for it.

Well, maybe if u kick down the details a bit....maybe...

HA!
fjeer da leet powas!

Seriously, I don't know what's the point of discussing it. We are getting more confused than we would want to. As far as I can tell, the technology that is in the alpha version has yet to be finished, or polished if you will. I never thought of running D3 on my Ti. I will be ready for Doom 3 in March with a new refreshed system (hopefully). We can debate on this and that, but only time will show. None of us are 100% correct so please spare name callings and such because it aint worth it.

E3 is in Spring I believe. JC said something about E3 2003 but I don't know if it was a joke or not. Currently the game is due in March if I'm not wrong

Yeah the game isn't really done yet....Carmack stated that he did not want to be one of those companies that repeats their technology at E3...and Amazon.com once had it on pre order for March 29th.

It won't be before the beginning of 2003....

Besides, I dont see why everyone is in a bunch over Doom 3 tearing up their Ti4600s anyway....NV30 launches in under 2 weeks, Doom 3 is at least 4 months away, AT LEAST.....so we'll have hardware capable of it by the time it comes out.

because, how can you be so sure? i'm pretty sure far far away from even being optimized.

What's the sense in optimizing a game slated for 2003 for hardware that was released in early 2002? It's not what Carmack was aiming for.

I do remember an interview that said "This engine will carry us for the next 5 years". Which means he's got plans for it....

Optimizations my ass, the fact is that there has not been any id software game to date that has required anything less than the top end **** to play the best details at a relatively low performance rate.
