No, its a New renderer, based on the Unified lighting approach...so its an extension on the actual tech of Doom 3, but a new renderer.

indeed..

but its more like a huge update ,than a completely rewritten rendering engine ..(technically speaking).. far from that. he even said that many of the new things are already in the DOom3 engine before the game was released but not used .but in the eyes of people it will be something revolutionary. Unreal3 like .. but even much better unless he was only teasing us with stuff he will like to see ,but that will be dropped in the end for performance reasons. heck the most amazing part was that he even suggested to allow Photton mapping radiosity lighting in the engine for non realtime gaming (to use the new engine as an 3danimation software) and ship a game where people not only can play ,but also increase the quality to movie like levels for demos or previewing purposes..

albeit you can do animations in 3dmax /lightwave etc.. but you dont have there a complete gaming enviroment ,(physics/AI/pre-made monsters/story etc.. everything conected)where you can't download and use others quality work or where you can't simply click the mouse or jump the editor and add another monter/or another wall or machine and jump in the level with the click of a button like if you were going to play it .all that with final fantasy quality graphics .

but its better to wait and see i dont want this time to hype to much Carmacks next engine.. Hopefully it will be as good as Unreal3 or maybe even better. Doom3 will be a good stopgap until those engines games are released.

From the looks of it Carmacks next engine has UE3 beat, no contest.

Sounds like what happened at the Mac Expo shortly after Doom3 development began. They showed a few demo scenes on the GeForce 3. Everyone was drooling and panicking - "OMG! I have to pre-order a GeForce 3 now (for 500 bucks) to play Doom 3!" and it was 3 1/2 years before we actually saw the game, and you really needed something more than a GF3 to play it on by then.

I've said it before and ill say it again...Carmack is the best in his field. 1 man doing better engines than a team of many programmers. More advanced renderer and musch more optimized.

Edit: Carmack is leaving after the next game, so he's let me down.

Go Epic and tim Sweeney.

I think the main difference is that there aren't going to be massive updates to the engine, like there were from Quake3 -> Doom3. The next engine is based on the Doom3 one (why ditch all that effort when you can use the lighting system and such again?)...

Carmack has stated that it is a major revamp of the doom 3 engine. So in turn, it basically is a completely new engine.

Carmack next engine.. will not be a rewrite of Doom3 engine, just a major Update..in the Lighting and shadows.. very high quality softshadows and superior accuracy in the speculars and normal mapping.. means the end of the plastic look some people usually complain and the end of the pitch black shadows. he already states that when he finished Doom3 already new stuff was added , in the engine and that with the things he is working it will be able to match Pixar movies.. hopefully it will be an game with more outdoors and vehicles as default.

btw.. take a look at Doom3 graphics
here... the creativity of people when using custom textures...

its not finished yet ,work in progress ,but as you see you are not limited to Doom3 style graphics .you can design levels for any MOd you will like to see. seems they are looking to do an ALice and wonderland level . if you have skills and some imagination anything is possible .

If the Doom 3 engine can handle outdoors well then why in mars are people still using 2D images for the background?

Farcry ,Hl2 ,Stalker all use 2d images in their backgrounds.. you will not find a single game that doesnt do this.. in outdoors areas.. Hl2 use 2d trees in the far distance.. FArcry however draws more distance ,Farcry doesnt need that much 2d backgrounds since the game is in an island ..but still use 2dbackgrounds.. for the Sky ..all games uses 2dBackgrounds it just that some of them hide it with FOG or with mountains. Doom3 engine can handle FArcry /Stalker ot Hl2 distance in their outdoors.. just like Callof duty ,do it in the quake3 engine.but even better since have more drawing distance.the only thing that will not handle well huge outdoors are your hardware. once hardware improve people will be able to push more and more polygons ,just like in any other game.

2D backgrounds for the sky is acceptable for me. I still find it disappointing that these next generation engines still require developers to use 2D mountains. Elder Scrolls 4 appears to be one exception but I have only seen one scanned magazine image showing its 3D mountains.
