Hi,
I'm in great dispair. I've been using windows for ages and decided to check out Linux witch seemed to be a great idea. Mandrake 10 installed fine after a friend gave me a few tips but then came the nvidia driver. It just want instal itself. Config : Abit KR7A motherboard 2 hdds Geforce3 Ti200 video card LAN and ADSL Sound 5.1 I tried 2 different methods : -first with nvidia... rpm and nvidia-glx.rpm delivered by mandrake they just didn't want to work -second i tried to instal the driver available on nvidia website so i started linux in text mode i typed sh nvidia ... .run and i got this message. I can't even get passed the installer menu. It kepps telling me the installation failed. ----------------------------------------------------------- nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' creation time: Sat Sep 4 13:14:11 2004 option status: license pre-accepted : false update : false force update : false expert : false uninstall : false driver info : false no precompiled interface: false no ncurses color : false query latest driver ver : false OpenGL header files : false no questions : false silent : false X install prefix : /usr/X11R6 OpenGL install prefix : /usr Installer install prefix: /usr kernel source path : (not specified) kernel install path : (not specified) proc mount point : /proc ui : (not specified) tmpdir : /root/tmp ftp site : ftp://download.nvidia.com Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface -> License accepted. -> A precompiled kernel interface for kernel 'Mandrake Linux 10.0 kernel 2.6.3-7mdk i586' has been found here: ./usr/src/nv/precompiled/nv-linux.o-1.0-6111.mdk10.0_2.6.3-7mdk. executing: 'cd ./usr/src/nv; /usr/bin/ld -d -r -o nvidia.ko precompiled-nv-l inux.o nv-kernel.o'... -> Kernel module linked successfully. ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This is most likely because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source files. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path' commandline option. -> Kernel module load error: insmod: error inserting './usr/src/nv/nvidia.ko': -1 No such device ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com. So as I understood the driver was not compiled for my kernel version (2.6.3.7) I installed the kernel source rpms and started again. Now to get this message. At one time I also had to use makeproprer command but now I get this : ----------------------------------------------------- nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' creation time: Sat Sep 4 16:26:02 2004 option status: license pre-accepted : false update : false force update : false expert : false uninstall : false driver info : false no precompiled interface: true no ncurses color : false query latest driver ver : false OpenGL header files : false no questions : false silent : false X install prefix : /usr/X11R6 OpenGL install prefix : /usr Installer install prefix: /usr kernel source path : (not specified) kernel install path : (not specified) proc mount point : /proc ui : (not specified) tmpdir : /root/tmp ftp site : ftp://download.nvidia.com Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface -> License accepted. -> Not probing for precompiled kernel interfaces. -> Kernel source path: '/lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/build' -> Performing cc_version_check with CC="cc". If you are using a Linux 2.6 kernel, please make sure you have configured kernel sources matching your kernel installed on your system. If you specified a separate output directory using either the "KBUILD_OUTPUT" or the "O" KBUILD parameter, make sure to specify this directory with the SYSOUT environment variable or with the appropriate nvidia-installer command line option. ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com. I just don't now what to do? Can anybody help ? I've trid other forums that talked about MESA problems and XF86congig-4 pbs but I haven't even gotten that far yet. Thanks for any replys. fat_turbo |

So are you actually able to get the 2D drivers working that Mandrake sets up when you install (e.g. vesa, nv, etc), meaning you can get X server running with a usable desktop? Or are you only able to boot in text mode because not even those preinstalled 2D drivers work?

Hi,
Yes, 2D driver worked. But now I've found the real solution and my driver works : Hurray all I had to do is type --add-this-kernel option at the end of the classic sh Nvidia ... .run command. You will find many others that have reported the same problem in other postings. I think my posting is now closed as I've got it to work. Best of luck. fat_turbo |
