Default Nvidia 6111 on Mandrake 10 kernel 2.6.3.16.mdk - What is RivaFB?

I am using the latest kernel and source [2.6.3.16] provided by Mandrake.
I made sure that the Nvidia driver provided on the DVD wasn't installed, but only the Xfree4:s nv so the update would be easier.
[I wanted to update both the kernel and Nvidia driver]

Yet it complains about another driver module, called "Riva FB". I don't know what to do from here so I am providing you guys with my nvidia-installer.log
[I only know that the driver won't install because of the Riva FB.]
Thanks for any ideas.

The problem isn't related to rivafb or your hardware, it's a bug in the 1.0-6111 installer; you should be able to work around it by running it with the --add-this-kernel command line option before the actual installation.

Ok, will give that a shot.
But you make it sound as if it was common knowledge, I'm a bit startled I guess cause I haven't heard anything about this anywhere else...

Well, it has been mentioned here (i.e. in a variety of "1.0-6111 doesn't install on Mandrake 10" sort-of threads) before... ;)

Ah, Ok. I thought I searched the forum but perhaps I didn't know what to look for?
Rivafb didn't help obviously

As su in the nonX window [terminal], I ran the:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run --add-this-kernel
which made the:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1-custom.run

I then ran:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1-custom.run
which installed nicely.

Exited su

I then entered KDE [just typed kde and entered] for a change of the XF86Config-4 [nv to nvidia] but I got 10-15 core dumps just while loading KDE.
After that I tried Gnome which gave me no problems at all, perhaps cause it was started for the first time?

What's that about? Does that command change anything important? Or is KDE tricky with it's utilities like system monitor and stuff? I had it set to start when KDE was loaded and it also gave me problems when I updated the kernel originally, which I can understand since the utility depends on the kernel LOL.

But this was new to me... Any ideas?

Many thanks for your help buddy, I hope I will earn it in the future

Good afternoon,

I had identical problems with Rivafb.

Installing with the --add-kernel first, worked well.

It took some time to find out, that it was not a problem with an rivaFB module.

In the XF86config-4 you have to replace the "nv" with "nvidia". Then there are still pop-up warnings, although the system showed no visible problems.

In the section "Module" of the same file you must look for the command

Load "glx".

I have added this instruction in the XF86Config-4 and after restarting Xsever, the problems were gone.

This instruction is mentioned in the readme file that comes with the 6111 drivers.

Hope this solves your problem !
