I've been trying to use nvidia driver on my laptop (toshiba satellite 2455-s305), and I have no idea what the problem is. When I try to start the X server using the nvidia driver, the monitor goes dark, but for some time you can see it's on, after a while, it goes completely dark, like if it was shut off. Despite all that, everything freezes, and my only option is to reboot everything with the magic sysreq key. I have installed 2.6.8.1 kernel, Xorg 6.8.0, and the graphics card is GeForce 4 420 Go.
Another strange thing: it seems xorg doesn't record log messages for this. After every atempt to startx, I have to boot Knoppix, change the Drive "nvidia" to "nv", and when I go in Xorg.0.log, the messages are from the latest normal startup, which means, they are from the "nv" driver, not the "nvidia". bash-2.05b$ sudo /sbin/lsmod Module Size Used by nvidia 2075144 0 I installed the driver from gentoo nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx: bash-2.05b$ epm -qa | grep nvidia nvidia-glx-1.0.5336-r2 nvidia-kernel-1.0.5336-r4 Any help is positive for me. The Xorg.0.log and my xorg.conf are attached Last edited by alsm; 09-16-04 at 10:13 AM. Reason: Some info I forgot |

I solved this problem. The error was in the kernel, I had to re-compile it and change the stack back to 8kb. The 2.6 series (I think that's it) reduced the stack to 4kb.
But, now I have another problem. I boot, the module loads ok, the nvidia logo appears on the screen, after the X server starts. I log in as my normal user, and just before KDE finishes loading everything freezes again, and I have to reboot with the sysreq again. I tryed desabling agpart on the kernel and using the Option NvAGP but the result was the same. The only strange message I found is this one: (WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory) this on the Xorg.0.log any suggestions? |

I don't have apm enabled, I use acpi, do you think this can be causing the freezing problem?
I have seen so many different things for similar problems here in the forum, but I still didn't make it. |
