Default suggestions on gfx card

well, i bought a radeon 9200 a whiiile ago but now i wanna play some games on linux heh and after realising both the card is crap the drivers are also completely **** and i havn't been able to get hardware acceleration working at all.

so i've decided my bank account can afford to purchase a geforce fx 5700 256 card. I'm just wondering before i buy a new gfx card if this will actually work well with linux and let me be able to play some decent games (doom3 with winex, ut 2004) stuff like that with good graphics and good fps's.

oh by the way i have a athlon 2500+ with 512mg ram.. if anybody out there has got a 5700 and is using linux your comments on the setup would be muchly appreciated Smile

Thanks,
Bryan.

Hrm after a bit more research i've found that the Albatron Nvidia FX5900XT is only a little bit dearer (AU$55), however the it only has 128mg of ram where as the leadtek 5700 (not ultra) card i wanted had 256. What would be the difference performance wise here?

Thanks,
Bryan.

Which distro are you running? I think nearly any nVidia-card runs very well on Linux and the drivers are easy to install. ATI's drivers are real pain in the neck to install on some distros, like Fedora Core 2. Also make sure you have your kernel sources installed, if ATI's drivers won't compile.

You can't go wrong with both the 5700 and the 5900XT, but if you can afford it, I would go for the latter. 128 should suffice for most games....

Now that I think about it... Maybe if you plan to play a lot of d3, 256 would be better....

The FX5900 is a LOT faster than any fx5700 based card. Although the fx5700 board might have more memory, the fx5900 will be faster. Further if you can choose between lets say model X with 128MB and a model X with 256MB, the 128MB useally contains better quality memory that runs at a higher speed.
