Unhappy "Unable to find kernel source tree"

I'm a complete Linux newbie, running Mandrake 10.0 Comunity. I tried to run the driver's installer and got:

-> No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; would you li
ke the installer to attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel f
rom the NVIDIA ftp site (ftp://download.nvidia.com)? (Answer: Yes)
-> No matching precompiled kernel interface was found on the NVIDIA ftp site;
this means that the installer will need to compile a kernel interface for
your kernel.
ERROR: Unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel.
Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your
kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the
'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct kernel source
files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the
'--kernel-source-path' commandline option.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
driver download page at www.nvidia.com.
What should I do?

You should 1) install kernel source (which matches your running kernel for your Linux distribution) 2) close X, run the nvidia driver installer, and if successful 3) make modifications to your configuration as per nvidia readme 4) try it: startx

As it says, you need to install the kernel source.

Select (from memory) System->Configuration->Packaging->"Install Software" from the kde menu; enter the root password, when prompted. Type kernel into the search box - one of the items will be "Kernel Source". Select that package, and install it. Then try the NVidia installer again.

Basically, the NVidia module comes shipped as a pre-complied binary program (the X11 driver), which depends on a kernel-specific interface. The kernel-specific interface is compiled for your machine and kernel installation. So my RedHat box has a different compiled interface than your mandrake 10 box. In order to compile this interface, the kernel specification is required - this is provided by the kernel source package.

Good luck.
