Question [suse91] rivafb driver conflict (driver install) -SOLVED-

Issue solved

Dear support,

I am experiencing some difficulties installing the latest NVIDIA driver "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run"

My first problem was that the correct header-files could not be located, so I ran:
"sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run --kernel-source-path /usr/src/linux/"
I hope it was the right thing to do (it did bring me a step further).

Now The installer complains about a conflicting module called "rivafb" and when the build processbar reaches the 100% I get an error
Code:
message: ERROR: Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module.
Some info:
Videocard=Geforce3
System: amd 2000+
Chipset: VIA
uname -r command returns:
"2.6.5-7.108-default"

The listing of my /usr/src/ directory is:
Code:
linux -> linux-2.6.5-7.108
linux-2.6.5-7.108
linux-2.6.5-7.108-obj
linux-obj -> linux-2.6.5-7.108-obj
packages
Help would be greatly appreciated!

The nvidia-installer.log file has been attached to this post as reference (but needed the .txt extention, otherwise the error "invalid file type" was returned)

If at all possible under your distro, you should try to re-compile your kernel without the rivafb module, but with the vesafb module. The rivafb module is well known to conflict with nVidia's drivers. If you can't re-compile your kernel, then you need to ensure that the rivafb module is _not_ autoloaded. The best way to do either of these things is somewhat distro-dependant, and I am afraid that I do not know the SUSE way of doing either.

Incidentally, which VIA chipset do you have? It has no bearing upon building the module, but it may affect the driver's performance.

I will investigate how to un auto load the module or how to re-compile the kernel, I am still kind if fresh with these things

but I also wonder if the rivafb is the problem.
When I enter the command:
"rmmod rivafb"
The following error is returned:
"ERROR: Module rivafb does not exist in /proc/modules"

Is that not strange? Or doesn't it matter if the the module is loaded in order to cause problems?

The rivafb warning is not related to the kernel module build failure, it looks like your kernel source tree isn't prepared to support the building of external kernel modules. Have you followed SuSE's NVIDIA driver installation instructions (http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-...ler-HOWTO.html)?

I am afraid I have not performed the following steps (shame on me):
cd /usr/src/linux
make cloneconfig
make prepare-all
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run -q --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux

Will do it right away when I am home again and hope this solves my problems.
