Default Poor GL performance using 6111 drivers on GeForce FX Go5200

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. I have attached my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log (with verbose log messages).

Video Card: nVidia GeForce FX Go 5200
Driver Version: 1.0.6111 (patched by gentoo to 1.0.6111-r2)
Distribution: Gentoo
Video BIOS: 04.34.20.42.e1
Processor: Intel Pentium M 2.00Ghz
Kernel: 2.6.8-gentoo-r3

The problem that I am facing is that I get very low FPS when I run GL aps. As of now I am just running GLMatrix which displays an FPS of around 5.00 and I dont think that there is any problem with the card because I havent found any problems in running GL based screen savers in windows. Any help on this is appreciated

You're running gentoo, so you probably know what you're doing and i wont say anything new to you, but anyway:

glxinfo | grep vendor

should say something like this:

Code:
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
check your AGP settings:
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status

Code:
Status:          Enabled
Driver:          NVIDIA
AGP Rate:        4x
Fast Writes:     Enabled
SBA:             Disabled

Check the links on your system:

Code:
ls -l /usr/lib/libGL.*
-rw-r--r--  1 root root    653 2004-08-05 22:06 /usr/lib/libGL.la
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root     10 2004-08-05 22:06 /usr/lib/libGL.so -> libGL.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root     17 2004-08-14 23:18 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 -> libGL.so.1.0.6111
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root 423832 2004-08-05 22:06 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.0.6111
BTW nice laptop you got there

Thanks for the help Andy, let me give you the outputs of all that you mentioned.

glxinfo | grep vendor

Code:
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
The difference is that I dont have fastwrite enabled not sure whats going wrong. The readme doest talk about it. Probably will try to force fastwrite and see how things change then.

cat /proc/drivers/nvidia/agp/status

Code:
Status:          Enabled
Driver:          NVIDIA
AGP Rate:        4x
Fast Writes:     Disabled
SBA:             Disabled
Update: Enabled Fast Write by passing NVreg_EnableAGPFW=1 to the nvidia module

cat /proc/drivers/nvidia/agp/status

Code:
Status:          Enabled
Driver:          NVIDIA
AGP Rate:        4x
Fast Writes:     Enabled
SBA:             Disabled
No change in FPS in GLMatrix

More Updates: Used NvAGP instead of agpgart. Still no difference.

The links for the library seem correct

ls -l /usr/lib/libGL.*

Code:
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 739 Sep 27 13:07 /usr/lib/libGL.la
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root  44 Sep 27 13:07 /usr/lib/libGL.so -> /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/lib/libGL.so.1.0.6111
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root  44 Sep 27 13:07 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 -> /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/lib/libGL.so.1.0.6111
The sym links seem to be fine.

Thanks for mentioning that I have a nice laptop. It made a quite big hole in my finances too.
