This is just a quick thread to post known problems with the new FreeBSD drivers, so the devs can see whats going on out there
![]() Please note, this is not a flame thread, or a "god these drivers suck!" thread. This is a "hey, this is a problem you might want to look at" thread. Those of us using FreeBSD should be grateful we got drivers ![]() My system specs: Via KT333 mobo Athlon 1.2ghz 512mb of DDR266 geForce 3 Ti 200 onboard sound FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE (just CVSup'ed today) That being said, the problems I have witnessed: * Definite lockup/reboot issues. This tends to happen after running an OpenGL application, then trying to run another. It seems to happen more often when using the AGPGART from FreeBSD (agp.ko or device agp in your kernel + #define USE_OS_AGP_GART in nv-freebsd.h). * When using the AGPGART from FreeBSD, the hw.nvidia.agp.status sysctl vars don't seem to be correct. For instance, it will say AGP is disabled, even though doing a quick 'grep -i agp /var/log/XFree86.0.log' will show that AGP was initialized succesfully. * This one is a bit more subjective, but it seems when an app generates mipmaps...its SLOOOWWWW. I will look more in to this and profile the actual gl calls. Please post any other problems you guys are having here (which as much detail as possible, and your system config if possible). The more info we give the nVidia guys, the easier it is for them to fix the problems ![]() |

Scratch that. I am compiling my kernel with DDB and makeoptions DEBUG=-g right now, and setting up savecore.
If (when?) it crashes again, I will see if it gives me panic information. Last edited by Kerion; 11-09-02 at 07:09 AM. |

Of course, as soon as I set everything up to catch any kernel core dumps....it won't crash :P
Oh well, I will keep trying various 3D apps and hopefully one of them will trigger the reboot problem I was having so I can check out the core dump. |

Hi,
I sent this to be bugs address. I'm adding a few more details I think I forgot. 533MHz Celeron Mendocino and I'm using the nVidia AGP support (not native FreeBSD). I thinks that's all I can provide without further prompting. I'm running FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE (built from CVS 8 Nov 02). I downloaded the nVidia FreeBSD driver (1.0-3203) and compiled/installed as explained. After modifying my XFree86 setup file (as explained) and restarting I have a machine that hangs or resets itself. Here is the information I can think you might need: % dmesg | grep nvidia ; dmesg | grep agp Preloaded elf module "nvidia.ko" at 0xc053609c. nvidia0: <GeForce2 MX/MX 400> mem 0xd8000000-0xdfffffff,0xd2000000-0xd2ffff= ff irq 11 at device 0.0 on pci1 agp0: <VIA 82C691 (Apollo Pro) host to PCI bridge> mem 0xe0000000-0xe7fffff= f at device 0.0 on pci0 % sysctl -a hw.nvidia hw.nvidia.agp.card.rates: 4x 2x 1x=20 hw.nvidia.agp.card.fw: supported hw.nvidia.agp.card.sba: not supported hw.nvidia.agp.card.registers: 0x1f000017:0x00000000 hw.nvidia.agp.status.status: disabled hw.nvidia.agp.status.driver: n/a hw.nvidia.agp.status.rate: n/a hw.nvidia.agp.status.fw: n/a hw.nvidia.agp.status.sba: n/a hw.nvidia.version: NVIDIA FreeBSD x86 nvidia.ko Kernel Module 1.0-3203 We= d Oct 30 06:06:58 PST 2002 hw.nvidia.registry.EnableAGPSBA: 0 hw.nvidia.registry.EnableAGPFW: 0 hw.nvidia.registry.SoftEDIDs: 1 hw.nvidia.registry.Mobile: 4294967295 hw.nvidia.cards.0.model: GeForce2 MX/MX 400 hw.nvidia.cards.0.irq: 11 hw.nvidia.cards.0.vbios: ??.??.??.??.?? hw.nvidia.cards.0.type: AGP I have physically (in the BIOS) set AGP to 2x so 4x should not be allowed (although I don't know why hw.nvidia.agp.card.rates includes 4x). I managed to run twm as root and play about a bit but upon closing the machine locked up. Also, if I run as a regular used as xmms loads the machine locks up as the playlist is about to display. Further testing as root caused the machine to spontaneously reboot another time. I can provide any details you require concerning this but a quick explanation (or details of where to look) for an idea of how to do it would be helpful. Thanks very much and congrats. for getting so far! -lewiz. |

The FreeBSD sysctl interface is implemented very much like the Linux procfs interface; the current values reported in hw.nvidia.agp.status.host-bridge are read from the bridge's agp capabilities register.

CVSupped to 4.7, Compile,install,mergemaster,
compiled NVidia code, installed, Tweaked X, and ran it! Man the code flew! Got the atlantis screensaver doing 70fps in the root window - with 200 sharks! (/usr/X11R6/bin/xscreensaver-hacks/atlantis -root -delay 0 -count 200) Until it hard locked... Just compiling kernel with debugging now - this is an SMP machine, so things may get ugly (two celeron 417MHz) But gosh it was fast when it was running!! Can't wait to get apps running properly... The following no longer worked: Blender 2.20 glChess tuxracer |
