Unhappy Doom3 problem with GL extensions

Gaa!

Finally the Doom3 binaries are released, but it won't run. Even worse, from what I can tell, I just shouldn't be getting the error that I'm getting.

When Doom3 tries to load, the end of the output is:

My Card is a GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE
I'm running a Gentoo AMD64 system

using the 6111 nVidia drivers.

As far as I can tell, I shouldn't be getting these errors, can someone tell me otherwise? Or let me know what I might be doing wrong?

My laptop is GF 4 4200GO and I'm using 61.11 Doom3 works for me.
I suspect there is a problem with the way the driver is installed. I had problems originally when upgrading the driver. It turned out I was missing a load of symbolic links to the new files from the driver. The result was glxinfo seemed to work but Quake3 didn't and Glgears was slow.

And would you mind tellling us what symbolic links you are talking about?

And don't forget: We're running on amd64 (I don't know whether you are too). We don't have the problem with 64bit apps, only with 32bit games

I'm on an 32bit intel based laptop, I' doubt it should matter.

OpenGL games do work, all those compiled as 64bit apps work, and 32bit games like Enemy Territory and Quake 3 work.

The trouble is with the GL extensions. glxinfo is a 64bit app, and reports all the extensions correctly. The 32bit games that do report the extensions (only other iD games for me) are missing half the extensions. It's just that this isn't a big problem for older games like Quake 3.

The problem turns out to be a kernel problem, a downgrade fixed it.

I don't know yet if it's 2.6.8 kernels, or just a particular Gentoo release.

I am seeing the same problems with an Nvidia 440 card in a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop running Mandrake 10.0 Official and the 6111 drivers.

Are there any Mandrake 10.0 users with the 6111 drivers that have Doom3 working?

Looks like there's a problem with your driver install. Check the lines I've edited, as these are not showing the correct information.

Okay I got it working on Mandrake 10 with my hardware (see previous post regarding this problem)

All I did -- I installed the 6111 driver again from source. I had previously updated the driver using the nvidia-installer --update command to get up to 6111. Installing the 6111 driver from the pkg fixed the problem.

Now I just have a sound problem -- no sound -- but this is probably an OSS vs ALSA thing

I will work that out too -- I really want to play this game!
