I think you misunderstood

At NewEgg.com I can buy a DVD Reader (not writer) for $27. My brother would need to buy one as well (neither of us have DVD drives). Then we would have to purchase the $70 collectors edition of the game.

$27+$27+$70= $124 to play HL2

It would be a lot cheaper to just buy the CD version and not buy any extra drives. That would only cost us $50.

Actually, I think that even if you only have the HL2 cd-key from a retail package that you can still download all of the game files from Steam. It's your CD-key that determines what products you have access to, if you get the Collector's Edition then you should be able to download HL2, HL1:S, CS:S, etc. all from within Steam without even touching the disc. So if you want the extras that the DVD version offers, just pre-load HL2 onto your computer, buy the collector's edition when it's released, enter your CD-key, and the game is completely installed on your computer and ready to be played.

Well, first off that's how EVERY other availible Steam game is, and secondly I'm pretty sure Valve said something to the effect of "preload Half-life 2, and you'll be able to unlock the game the game as soon as it's released by purchasing it through Steam or entering your CD-key". Since CD-keys are only given with retail products, it can be assumed that they were refering to unlocking the downloaded content by using your retail product's key. Might be best to ask on the official forums or send them an email to make sure, but from what I've heard HL2 is set up like every other Steam game: once you buy it, you can download it from Steam anytime.

Oh right you going for the reader, not writer, I misunderstand. However I found 16x Samsung DVD-ROM drive for $6 with free shipping at pricewatch, I think that is real bargain. So you can spilt $3 from you and $3 from your brother to pay for bargain DVD-ROM drive.

$3+$3+$70= $76 to play HL2, save $48

Yeah but then only one of us can install the game

He only has room for one CDROM because of all his case modding, and that space is being used by a burner.

And its not really saving $48 when I can just buy the game on CD for $50.

Believe me, if there was some way to work this out and get the DVD version, I would. But it costs too much and requires things I dont have, so Im going with the CD version

You wont have to download multiple gigabytes.

By the time the DVD\CD version comes out any bugs the game has will probably be fixed in updates.

If steam ever goes down the crapper, you'll still have a hard copy of the game to play if you have the DVD\CD version.

Only real bad part is having to go to a store, and having to wait another month.

If Steam ever shut down for some reason, all of us Steam purchasers better get some official hard copies!

Also...

All of us Steam purchasers better get backup their own Steam account file, Steam installer and all Steam back catalogue games into DVD-Rs especially with Half Life: Source which it will probably never will be available on official hard copies, just incase if Steam ever shut down forever just like WON network.
