I'm sorry if this has been asked/answered already, but if I buy the Gold package and pre-load HL2, I get all the files but they are encrypted. I understand that.

Then, once HL2 is released and on shelves, I can login to Steam again, register my copy and it becomes unencrypted or what?

My worries are that say Valve closes down after this, what happens? If I burn everything to DVD and am able to play it anytime, anywhere after registering it the first time, then there is no problem, but is that how Steam works. Are the files unencrypted always after they are registered or are they only unencrypted when Steam is active (i.e. Steam has to be running online or offline in order for me to be able to play HL2)?

I ordered the Bronze package off of Steam. If somehow Steam ever shut down, Valve better be sending me a DVD copy or something! I payed my money like everyone else. The only reason I got it off Steam is because I hate going through with preorders at local stores. I always have to be late for school or just not go at all to pick a copy up. Why not just stay at home, download the copy real quick (CS:S d/led in 3 mins) and play!!! Not getting a hard copy kinda sucks though.

My sentiments exactly. I hate to say it, but if they send me like a CD key or something, I know my roommate is buying the DVD, so maybe I'll make a backup of his just in case and should Steam/Valve ever shut down, I could still install using my CD key.

You get a new IP sometimes daily depending on your ISP.
