Question Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!

Hi,
Everything was ok running the driver 1.0-6106, but I decided to upgrade to 6111...
I installed with no errors, the module was up, but when I start X, I get an error:

[...]

The conf is ok, the same when 6106 was installed
I'm running Slackware 10 with Kernel 2.6.7
I tryed do downgrade to 6106 with no success, installation ok, but the same error typing startx!
Kernel headers and source (2.6.7) are installed...
I'm using 'nv' now, but I _need_ to play doom3!

Thanks in advance

Manually load the module:

modprobe nvidia

It might say why it failed. Also run dmesg to see what's going on.

Hi,
modprobe loads nvidia module with no errors, and dmesg says that the module was loaded, with no error too.
I don´t know what to do, everything seems to be ok, but it doesn´t works!

Once the nvidia module is loaded you can restart your X server (typically call gdm-stop then gdm)

The module is loaded, I start X and it gives me that error!

# killall -9 X
# modprobe nvidia
# startx

Have you changed your XF86Config file (or xorg.conf) accordingly ?
Make sure you read instructions in the /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA-GLX1.0/README file.

What version of x.org are you running?

I've been experiencing strange problems like this since upgrading from 6.8.0 to 6.8.1. Right now I have a manual modprobe in my /etc/rc.d/rc.local and then X succeeds to start on the third (!) try. Without the manual modprobe it doesn't start at all.

It was running 6106 with no problem, I reviewed the conf, its ok.
The version of X.org is 6.7.0. I tryed to load the driver manually, the problem is the same, no metter how many times I try!

Might it be useful to inspect lspci -xxx output (look for "VGA compatible controller")
and/or /sys/class/nvidia/nvidia0/.
Also after exiting X, try explicitly cycling nvidia.ko (i.e. modprobe --remove nvidia
followed by modprobe nvidia).
The pci scan in /var/log/XFree86.0.log looks sane?

If I were you, I'd first revert to 1.0-6106 and get that working again. You've got
things in the back of your mind that might sooner assist you in that than trying to
get the newer driver working. When you get it working, don't forget to save a good
XFree86.0.log from a session in a safe place. Might come in handy when you now
again try to install the newer driver. Just a straight diff (ignoring uninteresting
discrepancies) between the old XFree86.0.log and the new one might then be
revealing. There's other things you might save, like 'lspci -xxx output'.

Are you by any chance running udev? I found out my problems was caused by udev not making the correct stuff in /dev. I solved it by inserting following two lines in a startup script:

mknod /dev/nvidia0 c 195 0
mknod /dev/nvidiactl c 195 255

Daniel, I had this problem recently (using Fedora Core 1) after some upgrades, your suggestion to create the nvidia devices fixed the problem.

Cheers!

I registered with these forums just to reply saying that this thread made my day. I'm using Debian testing and my latest update installed udev, after which I experienced the same problems and behavior identified above. Out of curiosity, since I am not as much a linux hobbyist as linux user (or you can call my an lazy RTFM loser), can anyone tell my how/why udev does not function properly with respect to nvidia devices? How is it that without udev the driver works fine, but with udev, it somehow prevents the driver from initializing?
