Default Disappointed with Steam package prices

I was thinking about this because I just downloaded the steam.exe file and I was thinking about the Gold package and how awesome it is...but then I stopped and thought, "how awesome is it really?"

It's $90. That's $10 more than the DVD CE that is for purchase in stores. Correct me if I'm wrong, but VALVe gets 100% of money from Steam purchases, right? And correct me again if games aren't so ridiculously expensive due to publisher costs, etc., and that's why games cost $50+ in the store.

So why on earth does HL2 Bronze cost as much as standard HL2 that you can buy in the store (and actually more as there will be sales and such in-store, but never on Steampowered.com) when there are no additional costs being paid to publishers and store owners and advertisers and the like?

It seems like the packages online should be substantially less.
Bronze: $30
Silver: $45
Gold: $65-75

Those seem much more fair and would probably still be a crapload more per copy than VALVe would receive from store-bought copies. With the prices are outrageously high as they are, it just makes VALVe seem really greedy. I don't mean to bitch or whine becuase I know I don't have to buy it (I'm still almost postively buying the Gold package), but still...doesn't anyone else think they are charging just a bit too much on Steam?

I agree. I thought one of the points of Steam was to cut out the middle man to save on costs for Valve who then though would tranfer this over to the consumers. We save nothing but tax while at the same time get nothing physical we can touch. It should be cheaper and if it was I would have most likely have went with steam.

I will go as far as to say you get ripped off. You get no box, instructions or disks which also prevents you from selling or exchanging it if you were to get tired of it. But to each is own I guess some cant wait to post a screen shot so they wont wait a day or two to get a boxed copy from the store.

Yea....these prices are insane...I thought they would AT LEAST be $10 bucks cheaper than retail ....valve is being greedy, I guess they realize 90% of pc owners with high-end hardware don't mind spending near $100 bucks for a gold package...to them, $100 bucks is a shot in the bucket. But to me, $100 bucks is an electric bill, or a phone bill, etc. I'll stick with the regular $50 dollar version, I dont care about hats or tee shirts or little post cards, I just want the game. =)

This is my only gripe with downloading the game rather than buying it off of a store shelf. I'm still paying for the packaging and everything, but not receiving an actual copy of the game. This just doesn't fly with me. If the downloadable Silver version were $50 instead of $60, I'd be playing CS:Source right now.

Common guys, all ethics aside, Valve is in it for the money. Basic econimics really, early adapters will pay a premium, for nothing else than bragging rights. The game will be available on steam earlier than in stores, hence the premium price tag.

I agree with many of you that the price "should" not be same or higher than retail since they are skipping the whole publishing scheme. But, it's an offer not an ultimatum. You want to save, wait for it to hit retial, maybe even budget bins.

Yeah, I agree that the prices arent too hot, but Fatman is right (and fat too... heh heh ). The steam prices will probably drop considerably when the game hits retail. Right now its mostly just for people that want a head start on CS:S.

I really hope the prices come down for the Steam packages. I also don't like that already I'm paying $90 for the Gold package and it says that tax and shipping aren't included. Gimme a freakin' break! I'm already spending that much, you can't throw in shipping for me? Christ almighty...

Well for some countries (eg Australia) the prices for bronze and silver are well worth it! Silver is cheaper than a new game over here, so I guess that means we pay extra usually . Gold isn't bad if it wasn't $30 USD shipping.

Did you really expect buying HL2 online with the help of Steam would be cheaper than buying it for real in a store? I mean seriously, did you expect valve to lower the prices eventhough the middleman disappeared?

I thought this was pretty obvious, even a year ago. And I'm not saying that I agree with valve price tactics.
