yeah, I did really expect that because the vast majority of products you can purchase as a download cost much less than their print counterparts. Take Nero and 3Dmark as two examples of MANY. it always seemed like a good business practice to have the prices of your download-only versions of software cost less than the shelf version, not the same or more.

They might be bound by an agreement of their publishers to not try to undercut the prices of the "physical" version. ALthough since Valve and Vu aren't at the best of terms, maybe thats not the case...

Take for instance wine.. You can buy it at a store.. Or sometimes you can goto the actual vineyard itself where they make it, and buy it there too.. Most of the time, they won't give you any discount, compared to the fair price at the store, even though the "middle man" is cut out, because they don't want to hurt their resellers. Else noone would want to resell their wine, and their market penetration would be next to nothing..... unless the vineyard opens up their own stores (but then they would have to pay for that) or the majority of the people know and can easily buy directly for them.

Buying from steam is like buying beer without the bottle at full price.

Most people throw away the bottle when they are done with the beer.

I just checked out what the Gold package would cost me in Denmark. Product + taxes + "shipping and handling"? = 142$! That is just an insane price, that im certainly NOT willing to pay. I might have gone with 100$, but almost 150$? Man those Valve guys are gonna be rich pretty soon. Not that they haven't earned it, but I seriously think that they are pushing it too far.

Oh well, I just bought the silver package, im downloaing CSS now

To be honest, I'm more disapointed with the prices for the physical copies of the game. Think about it: for $60 off of Steam you get HL2, HL:S, DoD:S, and Valve's entire back catalog of games (including all HL1 expansions and CS:CZ), while the collector's edition retails for $20 more and doesn't include DoD:S or Valve's back catalog (instead it has a shirt...yay ). The only Steam package that seems overpriced is the Bronze, since you can buy it in-store for the same price. At least the Gold has some very nice extras to go along with it, the strategy guide in-store is $15 by itself, not to mention the CD soundtrack (that would probably be $15 alone as well), hat, posters, and all the other stuff. I've been considering getting the collector's edition, but it really seems like a rip-off to pay an extra $30 from the retail copy just for HL:S and a shirt.

I'm not sure yet...either the Silver or the Collector's Edition. It would be nice to have a physical copy of the game (on DVD no less), but it's just so damn expensive and it really kinda sucks that it doesn't include DoD:S. But at least I would get a shirt with it. So for now I'm leaning toward the Collector's Edition. I'd probably get the Gold if it actually had a physical copy of the game (they give you a collector's edition box but no disc? wtf )

Yeah, I really don't understand the lack of any form of disc for the Gold version, and I still can't believe that they are charging tax AND shipping on top of it. Aren't we paying enough for the games online already that they couldn't include both in the outrageous prices they're already asking?

I'm going to wait and see if the Steam prices drop near the launch of the game or shortly after, but I think I am more than likely going to skip class that Tuesday and go to Best Buy at least an hour before opening to get the game right then and there.

Ugh...November is shaping up to be such an expensive month: HL2, Nirvana Boxed set and TWO different Deluxe Editions of NIN - The Downward Spiral.
