Default 2.6.9-final breaks Nvidia Driver 6111

No problem with RC2 but Final is problematic. The build goes fine but it refuses to load.

The reason it isn't there s that 2.6.9 hasn't gone "stable". It is still on rc4.

No, RC4 would be labeled as RC4. While still in the "test" folder, this is labeled 2.6.9-FINAL which means that it is no longer a release candidate.

ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kerne...og-2.6.9-final

In any event, the NV driver no longer works.

There is a patch floating around on gentoo I think? I am using a patched version myself, it is 6106 though. I just can not remember where I got the patch from I will do some googling about and find it for you.

Walt

Edit: I found the patch file.

http://kernel.damouse.co.uk/nvidia-k...111-r3.tar.bz2

1. NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run --extract-only
2. bzip2 -dc nvidia-kernel-1.0.6111-r3.tar.bz2 | patch -p1, I think you might have to be in the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1/usr/src/nv directory to apply the patch?

Well, i wont upgrade to 2.6.9 until nvidia fixes this (it is a nvidia issue, right? I don't want to put the blame on the wrong thing). I do, however, think that this thread or some other thread should be a sticky. We already have like 3 threads on this, and i expect a swarm of people coming in here and posting the same problem in the next few days. I like the title of this thread and the info in it as well, so i vote it to be a sticky. lol.

Good idea; this has been the problem ever since the kernel changed, and the stable release is only going to make more people notice it. This is as sticky-worthy as the driver announcement itself. And yeah, it's officially a driver problem because WRT linux, the kernel is right until it's wrong on its own terms, binary-only drivers be flanged.

P.S.: Linus got hell for calling what was really an -rcX release 2.6.9-final because it wasn't 2.6.9, just a psych to try to stress bugfixes only. Now, there really is a 2.6.9 release, called 2.6.9, no suffix.

It's a very simple fix.

Do this:

emerge sync && emerge nvidia-kernel

that's assuming you use the ~x86 nvidia-kernel (why wouldnt you?).

Oh and you do use Gentoo, yes?

And for all us non gentoo users... how do we do? Any patch? and in that case where do we find it?

Well you can either patch the kernel or you can patch nvidia-kernel.
http://ck.kolivas.org/patches/2.6/2....ia_compat.diff
use that to patch the kernel, or you can use the patch for nv.c in the nvidia-kernel, for which there is a link somewhere in this forum...
