Default GF4 - strange DX8 problems

Hello there, I've searched through most of this forum and others looking for a solution and have done lots of research for my problem.

Basically my GF4 crashes the system in a major way whenever I play a DirectX 8 game. Older versions of Dx seem to be OK, same with Open GL. But whenever I play a Dx8 game it crashes the system within about 10 seconds.

I have tried everything. Diff drivers, reinstalled DirectX etc. Tried diff AGP settings, AGP driving control etc. etc. I've booted win XP and win 98 (I know that the Abit KT7A has problems with GF4 Ti4x00's in XP but it still crashes in Win98.)

I would appreciate any help and advice you can give me as I'm really stumped, my friend Leonard has the exact same PC as me (he bought my 2nd LAN PC off of me) and we got 2 different brands of GF4 on the same day.

System specs are:-
AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz
512mb PC133 Ram
Abit KT7A Raid (Version 1.2)
GF4 Ti4200
Soundblaster Live!
10/100 Mbps NIC
56K Modem
Win 98 and XP Dual Boot (seperate partitions)
300W power supply.

I've notied that a lot of problems are due to power supplies but surely if it runs Open GL and older directx games, this is not the problem.

Once again Id really appreciate your help - thanks in advance!

Derwin is a good friend. Whoever helps him out gets a prize
Me not know what's wrong. My guess is bios settings (memory timings etc..?).

Are your games crashing on 98 or XP? I've had my share of problems dual booting with those operating systems. Running XP on its own seems to have solved my problems. You may want to cleanly install only one OS and see if you have any better luck.

Does exactly the same on both OS's. Len has a clean win XP install and I have a dual boot of XP and 98. Both PC's are identical, I built them myself.

Thanks for the suggestions

I have a sparkle card, and Leonard has some other brand, I'll write the exact one later.

You know what, i have exactly the same problem. However, i have a pci geforce2 mx 400. But every directx 8 game i play crashes. Tried everything too. Only started happening when i installed directx 8. I guess, we just got to hope that microsoft fixes the problem in direct x 9.

Dx 8 or Dx 8.1? I had problems in DX 8 but they were fixed in 8.1 when I was running Win98 SE...

Also, are you running Win 98 or 98 SE?

I know this is not what you want to hear, but since win 98 will be phased out and WinXP is the most stable {I know some people my disagree} and it runs games just as fast as win98,there may be a few aceptions. But I would reformat and just use WinXP and make sure you have all the new drivers and BIOS updates.
