Default SiS 648 unable to do AGP 8X ?

I have linux 2.6.9 w/ nVidia 5900 FX. Card & driver work fine, but only in 4x mode, not 8x. Acording to lspci, my host bridge is capable of APG v3:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]: Unknown device 0648 (rev02)
Subsystem: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]: Unknown device 0648
Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B-
Status: Cap+ 66Mhz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort+ >SERR- <PERR-
Latency: 32
Region 0: Memory at e8000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64M]
Capabilities: [c0] AGP version 3.0
Status: RQ=31 SBA+ 64bit- FW- Rate=x1
Command: RQ=0 SBA+ AGP+ 64bit- FW- Rate=x1

But I repeatedly get this in my log:

Oct 19 15:56:52 titan kernel: agpgart: Detected SiS 648 chipset
Oct 19 15:56:52 titan kernel: agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 439M

Oct 19 16:05:57 titan kernel: agpgart: Putting AGP V3 device at 0000:00:00.0 into 4x mode

I get only 4x mode, whether I use nvidia or agpgart driver.

are you sure, that you do not have a 'Agp 4x' setting in your bios?

I have a Gigabyte motherboard, it says in big letters on the front of the box: AGP 8X, but no, there is no AGP 4X/8X settings in the BIOS.
