Actually, HDR also compensates for excessive light from one source by darkening everything else. Like if a camera is facing a wall, and then turns to look at a light source, that exact wall will appear darker. The effect looks best in motion: when you step outside of a dark cave you're momentarilly blinded because the sun is so bright, and your vision slowly adjusts to the sudden change in brightness. It works the same way a camera or your own eyes do, and really adds a nice bit of realism to the mix. I consider the light bloom to be more of a secondary effect.

It looks like it just brightens up a certain area of the map.

Anybody have any links to some comparisons between the different HDR levels yet?
I'm on HDR-7 and loving it so far. It may be Uber-Bloom, but I personally like the difference from the original game. (FYI, my personal FarCry launch shortcut = "E:\Far Cry\Bin32\FarCry.exe" -DEVMODE "r_hdrrendering 7" "r_texnormalmapcompressed 1" ) |

May be offtopic, but anybody notice some serious texture crawling once they enabled HDR and disabled AA?
I personally noticed it after I started a new game and got to the ship (2nd) level. Some of the grates show some serious distortion around the bloom effects ( see it and you should know what I mean) |

Yea, but I get a similar texture crawl issue in most other games, see the "Edge and texture aliasing" thread. It shows up in more in some circumstances than others, so it could be what's happening there. |

It looks pretty cool, but seriously, it's a little overexaggerated. By the looks from some of those pics, the sun has reached supernova status...
