Sweet, sweet memories.

Edit: It's interesting to read about the stuff that didn't ultimately make it into the game - like some of the AI behavior and weapon damage in multiplayer. I also had no idea of the backgrounds of the Valve braintrust. Those guys had a lot of experience in both the gaming and general software industry. Good stuff.

What I find funny is that Duke Nukem Forever is mentioned as an upcoming game... That was from '97!

Article date: October 1997
Percent complete: 75%
Release date: December 1997

Ah yes, how history repeats itself. Only a few months from the supposed release date, and yet the game wouldn't come out for another year. Given Valve's history I'm suprised noone thought the same thing would happen to Half-life 2.

Nice find, JakUp... playing Half-Life for the first time at college reallyl got me focused on getting my hardware up to stuff and paying attention to games in development. I played a lot before, but it was just stuff I got from my neighbor when he was done with 'em. It's good to see this kind of background/history.

Man, that old version of the alien (the one that shoots bees..?) looks unfinished.

Thanks!

I remember you playing the Surface Tension level on your PC. It was in software mode but it was still one of the most graphically impressive games I had ever seen. I also remember how you guys darn near soiled yourselves when I played it on my Banshee.

Those were some of my fondest college memories.

No scanner, sorry

Otherwise I'd love to, it's so neat to read people bragging about their Riva TNTs running Half-Life in 800x600. It's good stuff

And then we soiled ourselves again when we saw it on Colin's TNT2 Ultra. Heh. Half-Life, Carmageddon 2 and Quake 3 the stole my wallet and bought a Banshee and then gave it to me to make up for the fact that I had no money left.

The whole freshman year gaming thing ranks up there in my list of college memories too - 'specially playing Starcraft one Saturday night with Maryland and BustaFrau... and laying Maryland low with a wave of Protoss Cruisers.
