I'm betting RTCW2 will use HDR, as it is built on the Doom3 engine, which has HDR in it

Dunno about that... depends on the look they go for. I personally think that HDR is an aesthetic choice as much as a technological one... and I can think of a large number of games that HDR would look horrible in. I mean, Doom 3 for a start. That game just would not work properly if it had HDR lighting. Still, I could be wrong. I guess it depends largely on how RTCW2 actually looks.

Ridiculous DOES not have an 'e' in it. It comes from "ridicule" and has less than nothing to do with the colour red.

Interesting to see Xbitlabs HDR benchmarks which shows minimum fps too.

I wonder how Xbitlabs enabled 16xAF? The patch 1.3 doesn't AF everthing anymore. Forcing AF through the control panel may be forcing it on everything. Similar to how Doom3 is using AF.

My FPS at 1280x1024 with 16xAF is higher than their results. I'm running on a lowly Athlon Xp 2800+@2.2.. They must also be using the more performance intensive HDR levels.

The article is pretty good. Interesting how low the FPS drops for the x800 cards.

Ouch, that is a pretty big perforamance hit. But, it's nice to see that even the 6600gt will be able to get *acceptable* framerates at 1024x768 with HDR on. But what is that * by the 6600gt in these tests? And why doesn't the 6600gt take as big a performance hit as other cards from this effect?

from xbitlabs

Even though HDR works slow, there is a cure for that slow work even now. Multi-GPU technology like NVIDIA SLI would probably help to boost the speed. Of course, you should have a dual NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra or GT installation and you should consider carefully whether $1000 for a graphics sub-system worth an improvement in FarCry.
there is a cure for the slow work... and that is for them to turn [on] their brains ,and THINK for once what they are doing. they are using 16xAF ?? i get 3xtimes better playable frame rates at 1280x1024.. near 40+ and this is a slow atlon1900+ /Gt. all you need to do is to tweak the game settings.. like shadows a to lower their to 2x-4x with optimizations. with more tweaking i can get playable FPs at 1600x1200.

The 70.41 almost doubled my framerate in HDR FarCry and Painkiller demo 3. I went from choppy 800x600 in FarCry to 1024x768 w/ 8xAF smooth as butter. To bad I still get the lines in CS: Source.

EDIT: Why does the 6600GT have better HDR performance than a 6800 Ultra?

Yeah. I wondered about that. How can an 8 pipe card be faster than a 16 pipe card? I think Xbit probably messed up on their graphs or did something wrong with their configuration system. It's only faster in the first 2 resolutions of the 1st test. How much fillrate does the 6600gt have? Even at 16xAF, it's performance with HDR is up there with it's 6800 brethren.

xbitlabs used 66.81 problems which have hitching problems and big framerate drops in farcry 1.3. Need to use 61.77 or 70.xx. Also, if you have performance problems, you can use \r_hdrrendering 2 instead of 7. The game is very playable, the xbit numbers are off.

HDR looks really crappy for me. Everything is either really dark or really light in an unnatural way. I guess it is an attempt to look realistic but does anyone think it really looks much better? I have enabled HDR, is SM3.0 enabled by default?

EDIT: I just had a run through some indoor areas and I have to say there is a noticeable improvement. I'm running HDR rendermode 7.
