Gdm stays dark for me too, but if I enter username and password KDE loads! It does look a little strange though. I'm on Fedora Core 3, X.org 6.8.1, KDE 3.3.1. Advice? Reinstall previous version of NVIDIA driver?

Attached is a screenshot of part of my KDE desktop using the 66.29 NVIDIA driver after having logged in on a black screen gdm. It's pretty messy, all icons are at least thrice over each other.

Yeah, thats pretty much what happened with my kde. It seems like nvidia have broken compatibility with older cards, does anyone know of a case of these drivers working with a gforce 4mx or older?

MMm in my first test, I did enabled those options... and no one of them worked.
The thing I haven't tried is disabling AGP (I just played with AGP=1 and AGP=3)...

Same on TNT2 Pro. I wonder when this bug is going to be fixed. When the multiple X screens function was broken, we had to wait for two releases for a fix. I hope this time this is much more serious and fix will come soon.

Unhappy Re: Black screen with nvidia 6629 driver

Micha has the same probs. Only a logo, a piece of the first line (usually the mesh pattern) and a mouse cursor. Disabling the logo gives me an I beam, and when I try to log on in that dark gdm, I can partially see my wallpaper. The windows are black and the mouse is useless.

My lspci output:

Code:

I do not have Gnome or KDE installed but I do have wmaker, xfce4 and idesk however.

/proc/cpuinfo gives model name: Pentium III (Katmai)

My XF86Config-4 is a standard one generated by debconf. I entered my monitor refresh rate and 'ctrl:swapcaps' to swap left Ctrl with Caps Lock. This configuration has worked flawlessly with the old version.
Though I tried disabling kernel framebuffer, AGP, EDID/DDC, splash screen, hw xlr8ion, nothing helped.

nVidia seems to be wasting it's reputation on the driver side. This reminds me of the days when X crashed just by moving the mouse if the monitor has been put asleep.

Please, please, please, please...
What am I to do?!

Yes, I did. I send to them the same post I did here. It is still unanswered.
I also hope this bug don't take much time to get resolved.

I"ve got what seems like the same bug on an MX 440. In addition to the screen being black ( or the splash screen just staying there if I have it enabled ), the fonts from the fluxbox menus aren't redrawn correctly. Does any one else have a similar font problem?

Is the driver work on 2.4 kernel? I can't try this because I don't have the sources of my 2.4.27 kernel :-(

P.S. Sorry for my bad English.

This is *not* a hidden bug, which can be noticed in some special circumstances, I still have no idea how they could release such buggy drivers?! Or maybe developers from nVidia use only the newest hardware and they do not care about the others?

In documentation we can find our cards as a supported cards so i'm sure they didn't test new driver with our cards :/ even if they do not care about older cards, they ought check the compatibility if they claim that it's supported.

Please guys, calm down and try this:
bash-2.05b$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/card
and...
bash-2.05b$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status

See my results..:
Code:
bash-2.05b$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/card
Fast Writes: Not Supported
SBA: Not Supported
AGP Rates: 2x 1x
Registers: 0x1f000003:0x00000000

bash-2.05b$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Disabled
I think that our problem is that the new drivers can't work with the AGP bus. When i disable de NvAGP it partially works, if i use NvAGP the problem gets a lot worse.
I dont't understand why the agp is disabled, i tried to load a module for the agp but no luck. How can i enable the agp bus?? maybe is a problem with my motherboard??:
Code:
bash-2.05b# cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/host-bridge
Host Bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8385 [K8T800 AGP] Host Bridge
Fast Writes: Supported
SBA: Supported
AGP Rates: 2x
Registers: 0x1f000a12:0x00000000

Please post yours and tell me what mobo and card do you have.
