I am also having this problem. NVidia had better take a look at this and find a solution, as it's making a lot of customers less happy.

I'm using a Geforce 4 MX-440 (NV17), whenever i start up X, i see the nvidia splash screen if its on, or a black screen otherwise. Yet, I can login, open a terminal, and type init 3 so i can see what i'm doing again, and change my xorg.conf driver back to nv so i can use X again. Which is what i have to do every time i start Fedora Core 3. I installed FC3 on a freshly formatted hard drive. I'd try installing the 6111 driver but the .run file from NVidia doesn't seem to be able to compile a kernel module that works, and there are only 6629 rpms on livna.org. I'd really like to be able to realize the potential of this new driver, but until NVidia finds a way to fix it, I'm going to have to stick with the one that came with FC3.

I'm seeing the same thing on a Shuttle SN41G2. using the nvagp 0 option, fedora starts X fine, but as soon as the background is drawn, garbage appears all over the screen. I can start apps, but when I move the windows, I again get artifacts. The shuttle has a GeForce 4 440MX in it. I tried all options mentioned in this thread, even disabling AGP fast writes and disabling APIC.

Same here.
I use Debian Sarge with 2.6.9 kernel and Ruby, multi-seat Linux.
Hardware: MX-440 PCI and TNT2 AGP in KT7A mobo with 850Mhz Athlon.
Software: XFree86 4.3.0 from Sarge with gdm + fvwm.
This works fine with 6111 and previous.
With 6629 gdm autologs on the primary monitor and what should be the fvwm desktop is mostly blank.
I forgot to take a snapshot and went back to 6111.

First time ever that the nvidia driver left me stranded! Too bad!

I get the black screen with no cursor. I can't see anything and input ceases (keyboard lights extinguish). If I pass gentoo=noudev to the kernel, X loads fine however. I ran into the problem only when I enabled udev.

Hello,

I've tried several of the approaches to installing the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-6629 drivers described by postings on various newsgroups, with the same, unsuccessful, results, i.e., a black screen followed by slowly appearing colored vertical streaks. I'm using OS Kernel: Linux version 2.6.9-1.681_FC3 on a HP Pavilion zv5000z with a AMD64 and Nvidia GeForce Go 440. First I tried the simplest approach described on the Nvidia Web site:

'STEP 3: Install
Type "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-6629-pkg2.run" to install the driver, then edit your xorg.conf file as appropriate.'

Then I tried,

# modprobe nvidia
# cp -a /dev/nvidia* /etc/udev/devices
# chown root.root /etc/udev/devices/nvidia*

and that didn't seem to have any affect. Then I tried,

# modprobe --remove rivafb

and repeating the installation of the Nvidia drivers with "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-6629-pkg2.run".

There doesn't seem to be any error (EE) messages in the Xorg.0.log file (see attachment), and yet its not working.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Come on someone fix this already!!! It appears that what's going on is that it's not undrawing the screen. It keeps piling everything up on top of what's already there. The mouse curser replicates all over the screen, menu's arn't fully drawn.. Can't the developers make a DIFF of the versions 6111 and 6629 to find the problem? Come on, seriously. I mean, seriously. Let's see some, SERIOUSNESS, seriously.

The problem is understood and will be fixed in a future driver release; for now, please revert to 1.0-6111.
