Default Dvd-rom

I think having games released on DVD discs would be a nice change. Games could benefit from the large capacity, and we wouldn't have to swap discs during installation. The only problems is, some people don't have a DVD drive. How many of you do have one?

It has more benefits than that. Much faster transfer speeds, high quality video. You could add 'optional' content like demos for other games...just like DVD movies do. The large amount of data would make it harder to pirate games too, though they probably still will.

The problem is, its hard to get people to buy something for one game.
But the way I see it, if a good game started it, then more would follow, and it would no longer be a problem.

I think it's ridiculous that (practically) nobody uses it.

What's nice is that you can take a game like M$ Rallisport Challenge and put all the files from the 3cd's on a DVD-r along with a crack and Install from that, or M$ Streets & Trips which is 2cd's works when extracted and burned to a dvd-r.

i love to watch dvd movies on my leather chair with surround sound. would be better use if their were games, but usually i install everything to hd anyway so i don't really care if the game was on dvd or cd.

I wouldn't mind....I'm sick of changing discs when installing Unreal Tournament 2003 and Medal of Honor plus the add-on for it.

I own a Lite-on 16X DVD drive. It has got to be the best thing I have bought of my pc. It allows me to watch movies when my roomate is watching something else (with headphones of course). I just don't think DVD games are practical. We install games onto our hard drives first thing. From there they are accessed from the hard drive. 99% of the time the cd's use is to start up the game and nothing more. If the amount of information on the disks is a problem then companies compress the data so it will fit on 1 cd.

having a dvd-rom alongside with my cd burner is a great thing. i can just leave discs of my most played games that require cds and not worry about switching as much.

with dvd-roms so cheap it's not even a hard choice to make buy the dvd-rom!

My next rig will have one, since I'll be purchasing a nice Samsung 955DF CRT.

Yep, I have one. Baldur's Gate is the only game I can remember being released on DVD.

You guys need to think dvd-r/w. I'm currently backing up a bunch of programs on once disk. I've also put multidisk games / software on dvd.

And when I have $300 to spend on an optical drive I might do that. But for now, it's not financially practical for most of us to get a DVD recorder.
