Especially with the media priced as high as it is anyway. I can get 50 CDR's for about $12 and only about 6 DVDs, and then I'd have to sink $300 into the drive. Really not practical.

if i had $300 to burn i would use it to get a R9700Pro rather than a DVD burner.

If I had $300 to use for anything I'd use it towards a mortgage payment, especially since the 9700 I tried didn't overwhelm me.

Riven was also released on DVD. I used to have a 2x DVD player, but I never used it, so I sold it. Most new computers bought from a Dell, Compaq, Gateway, etc. all have DVD players standard. I don't see why games aren't put on DVD's. We're already paying $50 or more for games, and most of them are on multiple discs. It'd be nice if companies would realize how much it sucks to be swapping discs all of the time. Console games are farther ahead in this respect, and they cost the same or even less than most PC games.

you just brought up an interesting point..one of the arguements why pc manufacturers didn't use dvd is the price of the media is more expensive. but considering how xbox and ps2 use dvd for their media, it shouldn't be that much of a problem for pc games to start coming on dvd.

of course this kind of gets into a spiral argument. console games and PC games are really incomparable. console games certainly have a great average return than PC games do for publishers. which means that productions costs are a non-issue compared to the PC platform.

then you have content. console games can use as much or as little content(textures, data, sound, etc) and know how it will perform on a given console. the same is of course not true on pc. most PC devs aren't going to spice the game up with high quality textures and stuff when half the people who buy the game won't be able to use them. that's not to say some won't, as it is being done, and has been done.

DVD media is down to under $2 each and approaching $1. At $2 you even get the jewel cases. They hold the data of 6 cd's. Cd's cost ~$.20 x 6 = $1.2 Which is approximately the current price of a blank dvd. Into SVCD?... How about the whole movie on one disk? Xbox? How about 8 games on one disk? Not to mention the computer back potential and all the space you can save.

Not sure if the prices have dropped, but I remember seeing the Pioneer 2x selling for ~$250 at reputable sites.

True... I'm happy someone confirms what I believed to be a myth, since I could never find it and went through the whole 5 CDs set agony (not too much of a problem at first, but near the end of the game, you've got to switch between islands quite a bit and it's a pain).

Also, I got the Blade Runner game on DVD with my ancient Packard-Bell (and I never even started it... )
