I've got a Riva TNT2 Model 64/64 Pro as detected by install process.
Would this "Broke" condition also affect the mouse curser appearance and action?
When I set the Driver in the Device section of xorg.conf to nvidia, my mouse is jumpy, the curser leaves garbage everywhere and is just unusable.
... works fine when set to nv, but there is no 3D.

I tried the patch to 6111. Couldn't get it to work on FC3.

Yes, the mouse problem and frozen screen after the logo is all related to the TNT2 issue.

Did you try to install an un-patched version of 6111? The compile problems I had w/6111 may have been specific to Mandrake or my kernel version.

Kernel sources installed?

Yes, I tried the un-patched version.
I installed all of the development stuff I could find, but now that I think about it I remember seeing the source iso's and figuring I wouldn't need them. That's 4 more CD's!
Is there any way I can get the kernel sources needed for this without DL'ing 4 more CD's?
I Think it'll be easier to order a more compatible video card. I've got a newer one on hand called "e-geforce4 64MB DDR MX440 8X Light Version". What a mouthful! Looks like the chip is a nVidia GeForce4 MX. Do you think that'll be any better? It should use the 6629 driver.

Looks like the nVidia Geforce4 MX was the way to go!
Man, I got 3D!
This works with the 6629 version.
That was worth $50!

The way to setup linux is to open one browser window to lookup compatible hardware and another with your favorite hardware vendor for ordering.

Cheers guys.
Fedora 3 is groovin now!

1) Interrupt Grub from booting, edit the bootparameters with "e"-key, and remove the "rhgb"-parameter from the boot parameters. The continue booting normally. (This will skip the graphical boot in Fedora.)

2) Fedora complains about not being able to start GDM, ignore it and cancel all questions to get to the login prompt.

3) Login as root, enter "init 3" to go to single-user mode. Enter "modprobe nvidia" to load the nvidia-module.

4) Finally, enter "cp -a /dev/nvidia* /etc/udev/devices/" to fix the boot problem.

5) Now just enter "init 5" and you're back in business.

This solved my problem and now it boots fine. Maybe my experience will help others too?

Hey Pucko Thanks,
This worked for me too. I've been really disappointed cause I've not been able to get Fedora working cause of nvidia problem till I found your solution. I only like RedHat Fedora. It's all I've ever used & want to use. And I've tried suse, mandrake & I always come straight back to Fedora.
Much appreciated Pucko, Thanks again.

Angry Re: Fedora Core 3 and nVidia drivers - Solution

I have tried all the suggestions here when installing the 6629 Nvidia driver and no go. The installer complains about rivafb being installed but installs anyway. Then when booting into X the Nvidia splash screen never goes away. Also tried the 6111 using the patch file suggested but that wont install at all. Any suggestions.

I could install the 6111 driver, and it works, but the system freezes randomly

Default Re: Fedora Core 3 and nVidia drivers - Solution

OK, I finally reached a stable solution - my setup is Fedora Core 3, GeForce MX 4000, Athlon XP 1800+. 6629 had the "logo is stuck" problem, patched 6111 worked but caused my machine to freeze randomly.

The combination that works so far (as 3 hours of Enemy Territory prove, when I was getting freezes after 15 minutes of having the machine idle) is patched 6111 + updated FC3 kernel (kernel-2.6.9-1.678_FC3)

This solution also worked on a Dell Latitude D800 with FC3 but also needed to ensure I used instructions from post #23 (udev permissions).

Many many thanks!

I had to add the lines:

#inserts nvidia binary module
/sbin/modprobe nvidia

near the top of my /etc/rc.sysinit file. The only other change I made (I didn't test it before), was to cp -a /dev/nvidia0 to /etc/udev/devices/
