I have a Geforce 5900XT and have the nvidia driver working. When I try to enable dual head mode, the xserver fails. Anyone have dual monitors working with the 6629 driver?

Hi, guys:
There is weried problem with my FC3 and Nvidia FX 5200 card. Before upgrade my kernel to 2.6.10-1.760_FC3, every steps discussed here works well, I means that download kernel, get latest driver, run it, copy into udev. But this time after upgrade to 2.6.10-1.760_FC3, I did those steps, but the splash window frozen problem come back! I try to go back to 2.6.10-1.737 kernel and did install driver again, now the splash window frozen always! There is no way to avoid it. Did I need inspect some other files? Anybody has same experience with me? best regard |

God, what a nightmare. Here's my scenario:
AMD64 3000, 1GB RAM, 200GB SATA HD, XFX GeForce 6600GT. Linux noob. 1. Fresh install of FC3. 2. Updated to latest kernel (2.6.10...) 3. Downloaded newest nVidia drivers 4. Followed instructions on first post of this thread. 5. Edited xorg.conf 6. System boots using VESA generic driver. No option for a GeForce 6600GT in the display options menu. Help! |

I forgot to add - the driver install said something about rivafb module conflicting with the drivers. I couldnt find any reference to the rivafb module in xorg.conf, however.

It seems that editing the xorg.conf file and just changing the driver to 'nvidia' leaves the name the same, so it *is* using the nvidia driver (I think), as the splash screen shows up. But I can't change the screen resolution to anything above 800x600, and the refresh rate above 70hz. How do I get these options working? I run windows in 1280x1024 at 85hz and I want to be able to do the same in Linux.

I've tried to run glxgears but it tells me that the GLX extension is missing. However, my X log tells me that the glx module is loading. However, it then seems to be loading the 'vesa' module and then the vesa driver, despite the fact that i changed the xorg.conf file to 'nvidia' from 'vesa'. What the f...? So i checked in xorg.conf and it had been reset to 'vesa'. Cue changing it again and rebooting the machine. Now it seems to work. And I guess 7370fps is quite good. But how do I get the resolution problem sorted?

I'm going to try the Fedora Core 3 bypass. In the past the NVIDIA drivers performed flawlessly. You can't blame NVIDIA for the problems Fedora Core created.
I think NVIDIA makes great driver. The performance improvement I gain from using them once installed is excellent. I've never tried the Catalyst drivers so I have none to gauge them against. But so far i'm pleased. |
