Well I was one of the people that originally enjoyed Doom 3 quite a bit. I honestly never played the original Half Life so I wasn't as fired up about HL 2 as some people were.

All that being said, I found HL 2 to be vastly superior to Doom 3. The Ravenholm level had more "spookiness" then the entire Doom 3 game. As for audio, HL 2 has much better audio as well. Great use of 5.1 surround, I regularly found myself jumping and my heart pumping fast trying to figure out where an attacker was coming from or what was coming up behind me, etc...

Perhaps the shaders are a bit overused but heck, "the dark" was a bit overused in D3. Probably the biggest difference for me between the two games comes down to this...

I never felt the need to actually finish Doom 3. It just felt like agame, something I was doing to pass the time for a bit. Half Life 2 has pulled me in and forces me to want to continue and finish the level/game. It makes me anxious to see what's up ahead of me. Doom 3 did none of that.

Same here. I finished Doom 3 because, frankly, I wanted to get my money's worth out of a brand new computer and Doom 3 was the only game that could really push my system's boundaries. The only reason I've even started Doom 3 in the past 3 months is to benchmark an overclock and test for stability. I can't even make it past the first level before I get bored. I'm anxious to start my second play-through of Half-Life 2, however, because I'm sure there's stuff I missed and it was just damn fun to play.

Does anyone else notice shimmering on the metal poles in the train car in the very beginning of the game? It's really not a big deal but wondered if it indicated something wrong with my system set-up.

Well, I picked up the CE fo Half Life 2 today (I got the CE mostly because of the fact that its on a DVD but the tshirt is nice). And all I can say is..Oh My God. This is an amazing game (not that I doubted it would be). From screenshots I had seen it looked to be comparable to Doom3 and Farcry. But OMG, HL2 beats them hands down. When you're actually playing the game its amazing. Only took about 5 minutes to activate it too so that was nice. I'm very impressed. And of course it runs smooth as silk on my machine with eveything cranked up so that's an added bonus.

I don't think the shaders are over used as much as they are ill-refined. Meaning, I think in time with higher precision shaders the source engine could start to look very nice indeed. I always wondered why at DX7 the industry all but stopped trying to improve texturing/poly numbers and went to shaders only... but HL2 is a shinning example of how good something can look when you combine them.

It doesn't quite look "real" but at times the overall subtlelty of most of the effects allow you to forget that.

I love the game, that's why I'm playing it slowly, I'm savoring it.

How the heck do you run the timedemos though? I have 3 of them but. . .

Mmm I thought some guys here were joking when I read it, but let me clearify this:

Doom 3 is a JOKE compared to half-life2. It's amateur work compared to hl2. That's just facts.. There shouldn't even be a discussion of this.
It's time for some ppl to just bow down to hl2 I think..

Imo, HL2 is BY FAR the best game ever to be released so far, and it will probably stay like that for a few years, just like hl1.

What a convincing statement

I don't see why people have to incessantly bash a game versus another...

I for one, really liked Doom 3, and I really like Half-Life 2....and will continue liking and playing both of them the only game i know of that gets bashed more than Doom 3 is Halo...

Someone mentioned that you could stick people to the wall with a crossbow...you could do that in the first No One Lives Forever released back in 2000...In NOLF 2 you could remove the bolt and they would crumple to the ground...I really like how the HL2 crossbow sizzles...

I like the passing of day/night in Half Life 2...And how the menu changes depending on what part of the game you are on. There are so many little touches that really make Half Life 2 stand out...
