Default fix stuttering problems??

i know people are experiencing stuttering problems with hl2.. but does anyone know how to fix this? has anyone solved this problem? if anyone has please let us know.. and i dont think it has to do with the amount of ram considering people with a gig of ram are having the same problems..

I got the same problem. But no obvious solution I have found.

PS) Some say that decreasing texture level and sound acceleration, would lessen the stuttering.

I only get 'stuttering' at the start of levels and occaisionally when I turn around fast on levels with large open areas such as some parts of the boat level or city 17. This is common in most games I think, well AFAIK, BTW, I'm only running an average 1gb of ram so it may vary.

Bopples suggestions do work but that's all I can think of... maybe it's a hardware thing, I doubt a patch would solve it.

to fix sound stuttering....

Find your config.cfg file in the Hl2\cfg dir and then change this setting

snd_mixahead "0.1"

to

snd_mixahead "0.4"

see if that helps

You can also try changing from 7.1 or 5.1 or four speakers to 2 speakers in the audio setup.

This has helped me alot.

In the HL2 cfg folder make a text document.
Then rename it to autoexec.cfg ( make sure you have show hidden file extensions enabled in folder options).

Then add cl_smooth 0

Done.

1gb isn't average. It should be more then enough for this game.

Uh yeah, a gig is a lot...

Anyway, what some people are calling stuttering is actually the game auto-saving. The sound will stutter for a couple of seconds while the game saves then go back to normal.

If you're running an ATI card, I'm sure you've read about the 4.12 beta Catalyst drivers which are supposed to offer a pretty significant (5-20%) boost in the Source engine. However I believe them to be the biggest factor in stuttering because I replaced these drivers with the official 4.11 set and most of the stuttering seems to have gone away. I can't completely confirm this, but it's something to keep in mind for ATI users.

I also had a stuttering problem. It would stutter or stop for about 4 seconds when entering a new area. After lowering the resolution I was able to make it go away (for the most part). My guess is that even though the avg. fps were high, the card was running out of video memory.

I have this stuttering problem too and I noticed that hl2 is constantly accessing the hard drive while I'm playing. Most games once the level is loaded dont access the hard drive very much. The stuttering is occuring everytime my hard drive light comes on. I have plenty of ram so thats not it. It might be the autosave feature, but valve needs to come up with a quick fix cause this sux.

Try this to fix the savegame stutters:

right click half-life2 in the games list in steam, select Properties, and click the Launch Options button, enter -heapsize 256000 in the box, click ok, and ok again.

Try perhaps defragging your drive. I only get the stuttering problem when it first loads a new section of a level.
