Default NVIDIA-6629 problem with DELL 5150

I have been completely unable to get the latest -6629 NVidia driver to work on my DELL 5150 laptop. The previous driver(s) works fine and am currently using -6111 at 1600x1200.

I have tried both kernel 2.6.8.1 and 2.6.9 with no luck. I can get the NVIDIA module to compile without error, and modprobe loads it without error. But X (x11-6.8.1) will not come up saying the card failed to register.

Under -6629
/proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0 will read:
Model: GeForce FX Go5200
IRQ: 11
Video BIOS: ??.??.??.??.??
Card Type: AGP

but under -6111 the question marks have the actual:
Video BIOS: 04.34.20.34.d2

Anyone else see this? Any suggestions?

The actual error from Xorg.0.log was:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

I have tried changing the IgnoreEDID option, with no effect.
/proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0 shows ??:??:??:??:??:?? for Video BIOS under -6629 but shows the correct value with -6111.

I had exactly the same problem yesterday. I noticed that an installation I did two days ago on the same hardware worked just fine, but the one I did yesterday after wiping the system had the same errors you report. I fixed it by doing an apt-get update which brought down new nvidia drivers. I don't understand the apt-get system that well, but I think that some bad drivers got published somehow. Hopefully an update will fix your poblem as it did mine.

I didn't get my drivers via apt-get, I downloaded them directly from the NVIDIA driver download page. I suppose re-downloading them can't hurt though.

I'm using Slackware-current if it should matter.

Thanks for your reply!

On the off chance it might help get a responce, I'm attaching my nvidia-installer.log and Xorg.0.log from when I successfully compiled -6629 but when it wouldn't work.

BTW, a new download didn't help.

Seems like the driver doesn't recognize your card. Just before it fails in the log it should say which specific card is has found.

Could you post your config file aswell?

Check the output of dmesg for error messages prefixed with NVRM (immediately after a failed attempt to start X).

NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-6629 Wed Nov 3 13:12:51 PST 2004

Is all it says in dmesg starting with NVRM after a failed attempt to start X with -6629.

I just rebuilt/reinstalled -6111 and it works fine. What changed in -6629 that makes my card unrecognizable?

Sure, this config works in -6111, as I am using it now with it at 1600x1200. It doesn't work with -6629 apparently.

Actually that is a recent addition to my xorg.conf to see if it would make a difference. It doesn't. The config works, with or without that line, in -6111 and doesn't work, with or without that line, in -6629.

My guess is still that the driver doesn't recognize your video chip. I think there is a way to force a chip id (like the geforce/quadro thing).

Edit:
Seems you are not alone

Both of you have
nVidia Corporation GeForce FX Go5200 rev 161
