Both of you have
nVidia Corporation GeForce FX Go5200 rev 161
Do you have an idea where I could find the way to force the chip id?

One of the others with the similar looking problem in the link you posted seeded to solve his problem merely with a 'modprobe nvidia'. That definitely doesn't work here. (he also ran something called sax2, which is not a Slackware thing. ) I'm running Slackware-current.

thanks,
Brad

No, someone suggested to load the nvidia module, the problem wasn't resoved. I think he has the same problem as you.

I have the exact same problem with the same card and mine is also a Dell, a GX260, no help in loading the nvidia module here either.

I tried updating the BIOS of my laptop in hopes that it would work. I'm now running Dell BIOS A37. No change with regards to -6629 working with kernel 2.6.8.1, still doesn't work. (GKrellm shows my laptop running a bit cooler though...) Back to -6111 which works fine.

Well, you could always dive into the source and try to fix it yourself

I'd consider it if I had the slightest idea why it wasn't recognizing my card while using kernel 2.6.8.1. Strangely, -6629 works with 2.6.7 and 2.6.9 on my system now but, for other unrelated reasons, I'm sticking with 2.6.8.1 for now. Hopefully, 2.6.10 will resolve my other issues and will also work with NVidia-6629 (or newer).

Was kinda hoping zander would have some input.

Did you compile with any kind of patches to get the 2.6.8.1 and 61.11 combo working. They don't play along with each other out of the box.

Are you sure? I was sure I had compiled 61.11 on 2.6.8.1 both with the nv_enable_pci patch found in one of these threads and without any patches.

In any case, the nv_enable_pci patch would have been the only one I tried.

With 66.29 I have tried the nv_enable_pci patch as well as NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-6629-1155389.diff.txt and NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-6629-1165235.diff.txt found in other threads.

NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-6629 Wed Nov 3 13:12:51 PST 2004
NVRM: rm_init_adapter failed

This suggests a problem in the driver itself, rather than one in the open glue layer. We'll investigate.

Thanks!

For what it's worth, it seems to be a 2.6.8.1 unique problem for me. I just compiled 2.6.10-rc3 using make oldconfig with my config from 2.6.8.1 answered the questions for the few new items, etc. NVIDIA-66.29 installs and runs fine on this newly built kernel. As I previously said, it also works for me on 2.6.7 and 2.6.9 kernels. For some reason though I can't get it to work with 2.6.8.1. Strange.
