Default Re: FreeBSD-amd64 driver ?

I just installed FreeBSD 6.1 amd64 on my new system that includes a 6600GT and most of the GL screensavers work but are very choppy. It will be extremely nice when these problems are resolved with the FreeBSD amd64 kernel and the nVidia driver for FreeBSD amd64 are release.

Hopefully these fixes will be completed sooner than later.

I found this thread to be very insightful but extremely frustrating.

Nvidia does not care really about us. Is very frustating when you spend a lot of money in a hardware you think that will be interesting for your system and you dont have support from the manufacturer. More than a year since the fbsd amd64 release and a company like nvidia is not able to contribute to this driver. The community would have done it for now if the i386 drivers were open source. Very sad.

I read through the thread. (of course i am interested in freebsd amd64 drivers).

As i understood the freebsd vm system is not capable of stuff demanded by nvidia. ok,i understand that, imo thats quite a good reason not to release drivers.

But why do you all guys demand open source drivers for fixing the drivers to work without it and never go and want to add that feature to freebsd (which would obviously result in available drivers sooner or later)?

Hmmm, well _that_ makes interesting reading (and useful background info). Unfortunately, it's probably so far down in the core functionality of the FreeBSD kernel that the rest of us mere mortals won't be able to help much... it needs design decisions to be made regarding new/changed interfaces which (I believe) the FreeBSD kernel people should probably be doing (are they?)... along with stress-testing etc to ensure existing functionality isn't broken.

Thanks for the info Zander -- that's the first low-level description I've seen of _why_ it's not just a matter of recompiling the i386 driver source with 64-bit output enabled (which I had been wondering for a while). Fingers crossed that steady progress will be made. X-)

At least we have support in some way shape or form, it's obvious there is some issue, some problem; why else would it take upwards of a year?

I'll urge em' like the rest, but none for the whining.

i too would be interested in 64bit drivers, is htere somthing the software industry doesent want us to do with our 64 bit processors, as the hardware has been there for upwards of 2 years now and we still do not have a stable usable platform from nvidia , ive experiences some horrible problems with both graphics and NV raid support on other platforms

I want those (amd64) drivers too ! I switched me from ATI to NVIDIA 2 years before because of sucking ATI drivers those does not exsiting for FreeBSD (i had ATI 9800Pro at that time). So i bought me GF6800 and was happy till i made an upgrade of the system. Last year in december i got new AMD64x2 machine and of course first what i have done - installed FreeBSD ... I was surprised that drivers for amd64 are not existing ...
I hope the drivers for my favorite OS will be soon available.

BTW, If you cvan revive the old 9800, it should be supported by the open source r300 driver. (Though, your new board is most likely PCI-E and the old card is AGP so...

Oh well

xgl/compiz is now running on freebsd: http://wiki.compiz.net/index.php/FreeBSD_6.x . Another big reason for this driver
