Rather OT answer: No matter if you're a Windows XP/Vista, Linux or BSD user, don't buy hardware unless it has rock-solid driver support -before- you make the purchase.
P.S. It's not a BSD problem - just count the number of poor (?) Quad-SLI users that are still waiting for working XP drivers...

Looks like ATI follows through at an increased pace now:
http://ati.amd.com/developer/open_gp...mentation.html

Unless NVidia buys them and kills that progress (which I don't think they can) I guess we FreeBSD/amd64 people might be in luck some time in the not too distant future.

Seems that the OSS community is beginning to apply pressure on nVidia to follow suite [1].
While I doubt that nVidia will open their blob drivers, they'll most likely follow AMD's lead and release the complete specs.

I need FreeBSD x64 drivers for my 8800 card too. Got to have x64 to use all my RAM.
I can't wait to throw my Vista peace of sh*t in the garbage, but without driver support it won't happen.

Could anyone tell exactly what other cards work with FreeBSD/amd64? No 3d needed, just xvideo extension and preferably some 2d.

I see this particular trail goes back years. (2005)

All I can say is that Nvidia as a company either does not read any of this or they simply don't care what their dedicated customers think!

I myself have only bought Nvidia (and 1 ati card) over the past 10 years.

I am not surprised that Apple based the OS/X operating system around mach 3.0 & FreeBSD. What does surprise me is that FreeBSD is not taken seriously by the big manufacturers.

Without hardware support an operating system quickly becomes limited to very specific hardware and then as that hardware becomes obsolete so will the OS.

I have been involved with FreeBSD since v1.0, I still have the CD. I have tried many other free OS's out there (including Linux, many times) but I am a professional and I know the FreeBSD community have got it right.

Support us, and we will sing your praises... come on Nvidia please respond.

For just 2D? Almost anything (except possibly the intel [X]3100/3500 series cards, which are apparantly still sketchy, but many have gotten them working.

I had trouble getting my 7300GS working on my AMD64 box with the nv driver (comes with x.org, and is NOT the nvidia driver). I know others have not had the problem.

To my knowledge, any driver bundled with xorg (i.e. everything but drivers produced by nvidia), including the open source nv driver for nvidia cards, works with AMD64.

ATI 7500-9250 are still a safe bet. Work for me with Google Earth now (i386/FreeBSD but should do in amd64).

The Xorg/DRI drivers that they reverse engineered for some medium-class better cards should do, too, but since I don't have any of these cards I can't test.

Prompt, where it is possible to find the driver for FreeBSD 7 x64?
In general, there are decisions?

linux_dri does not work on amd64, so Google Earth won't work either (unlesss there's some FreeBSD binary for it that I'm not aware of).

And the r300/r400 cards (the 9550 through the x1050) also work fine with with 2D/3D acceleration in FreeBSD.

Right, FreeBSD/AMD64 has no hardware 3D for Linux/i386 binaries in the emulation. That has recently been discussed and isn't fixed.
