@jrisom: this thread has always been about "getting something that works reliably"; if you read up on the complete thread and the information linked to, you will find that although some of the features requested will help improve performance on FreeBSD i386, their primary purpose is to enable FreeBSD amd64.

My interest in GPU is solely in the area of general-purpose/high-performance computing. Would the requirements for an amd64 driver be relaxed if the scope is limited to GPGPU support?

Do you really think nvidia is going to move away from their unified driver interface to provide a handful of users with a GPGPU driver on FreeBSD?

@Tachyon: no, the compute runtime driver has almost identical requirements.

I believe that it will, assuming that you have 2GB or less of memory in your system.

FreeBSD7.0 SMP i386/AMD64 Proc (dual core)/3GB Memory

Works perfectly.

We might be able to help you if you actually tell us what issues you are having :-)

I downloaded/burned the 7.0/i386 CD. I did a minimalisitc install (documentation and base system). I csup'ed src and ports. I modified the configuration to get rid of a bunch of NIC drivers (all but re and nve), then I took out almost all of the raid and scsi drivers. Aside from that, it's the generic kernel (which defaults to SMP enabled).

On one install, I installed X & the nvidia driver first, from ports, it worked fine (reinstalled X/driver after updating the kernel/world though). On the other, I updated the kernel first, it worked fine.

I kept the default make.conf and did the installs via portupgrade, with the '--batch' flag.

Shout-out to NVIDIA...

Here is yet another request for 64-bit drivers on the BSD Platform. While there has been little direct information made available from the FreeBSD kernel hackers, it seems there are still a couple of issues blocking this driver (PAT, for example). Having said that, there's still a good bit of know-it's-going-to-need-to-be-done-anyway work towards getting the FreeBSD AMD64 driver "out the door".

Already using Nvidia gfx on my Linux AMD64 box (sincere thanks to the nvidia people for that much), the only thing keeping me from buying Nvidia for the FreeBSD box is the hangup on the AMD64 driver.

Or, in corporate speak--- the sooner this driver happens, the sooner you get my $$$.
Just keep that in mind.

Thanks, and happy coding!
