According to the FreeBSD wiki (NvidiaFeatureRequests), everything required for the amd64 driver is ready for 7.3/8.0. Does this mean we're just waiting for NVIDIA now?

Yes, provided the features work as intended in FreeBSD 7 and 8 (they likely do, but the driver stack has only been tested with HEAD so far). Please also see my last post in this thread.

Would this also mean that 8.x becomes an officially supported release?

I expect both FreeBSD 7.3 and FreeBSD 8.0 (upon its release) will be supported. Support for older FreeBSD releases will likely be discontinued in the near future.

This is extremely exciting news. Thanks everyone who are working on this!

I currently have Arch Linux (testing repo) installed on one of my hard drives, but I am reluctant to boot back into it since I've recently been smitten by the allure of FreeBSD. I just want to compile ports all day and run on an extremely stable system. :> That, and I've recently bought a GTX 295 in anticipation of totally moving away from Windows for any serious (and maybe un-serious) work.

also nice to hear that you're finally dropping 4/5/6 support. the binaries that go in /usr/local/bin are still being build against 5.3. although the src for nvidia-settings is available it's a pain to rebuild it everytime the driver gets re-installed.

also this would let us get rid of a lot of legacy libs which in most cases are only needed by the nvidia driver (provided by misc/compat5x).

cheers.

oh....and great news to see that the amd64 driver is progressing. personally i considered the chances of an amd64 driver release to happen a lot lower than for duke nukem forever to ever get released.

I've been watching (and drooling) over this project in major anticipation for the 64-bit driver as I love FreeBSD. Thank you for all the hard work.

This request may be a bit preliminary, but is there any chance of a plan to be developed to gather requirements for a 128-bit FreeBSD driver system? Not the program, just a roadmap of how this process can be streamlined.

Just a thought...

just to connect this driver with actual revenue.

when the freebsd amd64 driver is released, i will buy a reasonably expensive nvidia card for two or more of my computers.

until then, my money will be spent on your competitors products

128-bit mainstream cpus will probably pop up in ~ 10-15 years. add another 3-5 years for the architecture to get tier 1 support under freebsd and maybe another 2-5 years for nvidia to release a 128-bit driver.

so you can look forward to be seeing a 128-bit freebsd driver in ~ 15-25 years. stay tuned.

I went ahead and switched to amd64 for ZFS to avoid the panics under i386. I'm getting by with nv for now, since I got dual displays working on it, but acceleration will be a breath of fresh air
