To an extent, the main difference is simply that indoor areas rely on on building rooms with vis coordinates that allows it to only render the rooms you're close enough to see, while in outdoor areas it's much harder to keep the engine from rendering objects not visible to the player and it has to use a totally different occlusion method. Just load up Farcry with HDR and AA enabled: you'll get a "see through" effect which renders everything in reverse order, so you can see the farthest objects that the engine is actually rendering. In indoor areas it only renders adjacent rooms, but in outdoor areas it renders things in clusters (like every group of 10 trees or so). With an engine designed for indoors, it would simply render EVERYTHING in that area. At least that's a basic interpretation of the main difference between the two types of engines, there are a few other differences but the occlusion method is one of the major ones. But, any engine designed for indoor areas *can* be used for outdoor ones, you just have to know what limitations it has and what it's efficient and not efficient at doing in an outdoor environment (for example, when I figured out that the Half-life engine rendered each texture repeat as another polygon, it became pretty easy making large environments run efficiently simply by streatching the textures...though it wasn't very pretty).

Does anyone know of any sites that cover this game? Im looking for a place that would have a community for mapping\modding for this game. It seems like its been out long enough for some people to have picked up on the modding tools but because it was also on XBox, its nearly impossible to find anything like that through a search engine (id have to sift through 1000s of XBox articles).

I don't see why is that fuss about Riddick actually. I've played a little and reached somewhere in the middle a guess and I abandoned it. It was not capable of keeping my interest. The characters all look made of plastics, rooms are monotonous and drab, movement is unstable and very unconvenient making almost inposible to aim. So after I've played Doom3, FarCry and especially HL2 I find this game total rubbish. Sorry !!!

Wow, Im surprised.

I found the scenery very cool considering its in a prison (you cant expect TOO much... concrete walls, security cameras, bars... a prison). I thought the characters looked great. Maybe a little shiney, but I guess with nowhere to bathe and in a place that looks as warm as that, I guess anyone would be shiney and sweaty looking

I also thought the movement was perfect. When most games try to make movement feel realistic but it ends up feeling clunky (BF1942, BFV, OpFlashpoint). Riddick seemed perfect to me. I had no problem getting headshot after headshot with the assault rifle. Aiming was a breeze for me.

I finished it last week after playing it for only a few days. It was definately too short, but overall I think it plays better than Doom3 and HL2. Considering the locations in the game, the graphics are great. The up-close textures are better than Doom3 and of course HL2 has those nice outdoor scenes, but again, Riddick is great and can easily stand with Doom3, FarCry, and HL2 as the best FPS games of 2004.

WOW! Where did this game come from!!!

This game really compares well with Doom 3, HL2 and Farcry.

Better gameplay than D3 and at least as good as HL2. Indoor only but nicely done.

Great graphics and good atmosphere. The awesome cut scenes in between the missions advance the storyline nicely.

Big thumbs from me!!!

I am getting really fustrated with the support for this game...game is brilliant however the game crashes at specific points and there is no mention of a patch to fix these problems....
