Liquid, I'm not even going to try. This person clearly falls into the "semi-user" category - someone who knows just enough about computers to be self destructive. No matter how detailed an explanation you try to give (and you did an excellent job, btw) they're still not going to get it. I put this very much in the lost cause category.

It would be best for the troubled user to find a friend who knows what he's doing and get him to resolve the issue and show him in person exactly what to do in the future.

DISABLE ON-BOARD VIDEO in device manager by right-clicking and hit Disable.

Then,

1. Download and install driver cleaner 3 http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745
2. Download (but DO NOT install yet) nVidia driver of your choice
3. Go to device manager. Right-click the nvidia display adaptor > Uninstall.
4. Reboot
5. Enter safe mode by pressing F8 before the Windows load screen
6. Run Driver Cleaner 3. Remove nVidia drivers.
7. Reboot
8. Double-click driver installation file wait for setup to finish
9. Reboot

Good luck!

One of our customers just had a similar experieince. SolidWorks was not displaying certain shaded parts correctly, so we suspected a driver problem. Device Manager indicated only the default VGA driver was installed (same as Duelist). The correct nVidia driver was installed previously, but was now missing. All attempts to uninstall the exisitng display adapter failed with either "Windows could not load the installer for display" or "This device is required to start your computer". The same was true when trying to install new drivers.

Our customer also could not open the display settings by selecting Properties after right-clicking the desktop. However, they could open the Control Panel applet. Attempting device removal from Safe Mode failed in the same fashion.

Removing WXP SP2 did not fix the problem, but refreshing the current Windows installation did. However, we have no idea how the problem occurred in the first place.

Very simple solution. Just found this.
Find "desk.cpl" in "C:\windows\system32\dll cache" and copy it to system32 folder.
That's it!
