Default nvidia + gentoo linux + AMD64 asus notebook - FREEZE !!

Hi,
I have an ASUS notebook with AMD64, gentoo x86_64 distribution.
Card is NVIDIA GeforceFX 5650
I installed xorg an nvidia drivers, following guides :

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

I can start X and KDE, it's very nice but the system always crashes in less than 2 minutes and I have to power off.

I tried removing the gentoo packages nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel, and installing the package by NVidia : NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-6629-pkg2.run

Results are exactly the same: in 2 minutes it crashes.

I tried removing agpgart from kernel and forcing Xorg to use Nvidia agp directly (on nforce 3 chipset)

Results are the same.

I've tried to use vmware on this X server; if I can start vmware before the usual system crash, I can see that the x server IMMEDIATELY crashes going to full screen (direct graphics required). This is also a problem for me.

I attach configuration and log.
If there's no solution, please tell me; In this case I have to change the (new) notebook and avoid nvidia products for the rest of my life.

Regars,
Marco Azzali

You can look in /var/log/ for other logs... they could be telling. Does the "nv" driver cause as much grief? And check your ram with memtest86.

on gentoo don't install the nvidia driver from the site... just use the ebuild as you did first (emerge nvidia-kernel, emerge nvidia-glx, opengl-update nvidia) as it could brake your setup (mostly opengl libs). Did you try to not enable at all the agp driver.

Hi,
nv doesn't freeze the machine, but video quality is not accettable for me.
The first thing I did was to use the "e-merged" driver; then I tried with the official NVIDIA package. Then, again, with the e-merged one. Results are always the same.
I also tried totally disabling AGP ( with value 0 in the parameter.. ); it freezes anyway.
Memtest is ok.
Now, I'm thinking about renouncing 64bit... I will keep my old notebook P4 32bit with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 128MB. I can't spend so much time to solve NVIDIA problems !
