Default Driver API: How to wait for vertical retrace / vsync?

I was poking around the Xorg xcompmgr code. I wanted to make it wait for vertical retrace before drawing the screen. I know that to do this really well would require more changes in the X server, but I thought I could get a good imitation.

The old way that used to work was to open /dev/nvidia0 and poll it for an event. But that doesn't work anymore? What is the new way, if there is one?

This is 2D, not OpenGL.
