My 30GB Maxtor has being doing that "beep-beep" (or in some cases, a series of pops and clicks) since the 8th month I've had it but I've stuck with it - so far 3 years. Only get this "beep-beep" or click-o-rama once a week, tops.

I probably won't replace it until I hear it clang and grind.

It gets annoying but the drive keeps on tickin' and that's all I care. Lately it hasn't done it at all.
